Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 31 2008

Yesterday, I attended the Lazer 103.3 Guitar Hero tournament qualifier, which promised no less than one thousand American dollars for attaining victory at the final tournament.

The first round was played on the Easy difficulty which you would think is the easiest mode in which to play the game. However, they had a little trick up their sleeves. By introducing an Audio/visual "lag" element on their HDTV, you had to play the game a bit off rhythm, strumming notes well before they crossed the little circle of acceptance. I managed to hit all of my notes under this condition, while opponent had trouble adjusting to it. I was declared worthy to advance, and moved on to the next round.

This round was played on the Medium difficulty. For this round, my opponent and I got to play on a CRT television, and the notes crossed the circle at the exact time they were supposed to. However, my fingers were moving so fast, that I actually missed a few notes! My opponent missed fewer notes, and was declared victorious.

The above was an attempt at satire. I figured that instead of being angry at the fact that the tournament wasn't run very well, and I lost on a difficulty that shouldn't even exist in a tournament for such a huge prize, I'd try to get some laughs out of it.

Here's a translation of what I actually meant:

Their HDTV had quite the sizeable lag on it. Attempts were made to remedy it, but were fruitless. Though I could blame any number of things for my loss in the second round, it's ultimately my fault. So yes, I was legitimately beaten on Medium.

Upon showing up, quite a few players were shocked to find that the Expert difficulty was never to be played during the tournament. I believe this to be a precautionary measure by Lazer, to ensure that no one's heads would explode due to watching it. Actually, it's a load of bs. Why would you have a tournament to award the best player, but first make them grind through lower difficulties to get to where they can actually prove their skill? I know I'm not the best player out there, but I am pretty damn good. You'd never know that seeing as how I lost on Medium. I'm sure many other good players lost out in the first couple of rounds as well, and it just sucks. This could have been a good tournament, but unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. I do wish the winners of the qualifier good luck, though, and hope the winner enjoys his American dollars.

I guess if there's anything good to say about yesterday, it's that I got to talk with some cool people including Shade505 who is here on the GoG already, and a couple other guys (who were directed to the GoG by the tag-team efforts of RyuBlitz and myself). I was kind of suprised RyuBlitz showed up and was able to accompany me back to the tournament to watch. (The email I received said that only 21+ were able to spectate) He put up with my douchebaggery for a bit, and upon my elimination, we went to CyberOps for a bit. We rocked out for a little bit on Rock Band, and he created the scariest character I've ever seen. I think part of my soul is missing now. After the rocking, we 2 vs 2'ed some kids at the store in Halo 3, who proceeded to destroy us. During these matches, I got a bit worked up and said some things, but I didn't mean any of it - I say all sorts of crap when I'm getting my ass kicked. Anyone who has been on my team during the GoG game nights knows this. Wink I apologized for my douchebaggery afterwards, and that is where my epic journey ends.

They need to hire our company for these events...this isn't the first time that an event has been weak because of lacking knowledge of the game and how people play it!

Nice work on attending though and it sounds like it was a good day overall.

Your sarcasm in the first couple paragraphs wasn't lost on me, that's for sure.

Sorry you didn't have a better run. I know some guys who can only play on hyperspeed, so when we slow it down (even in Expert) they're missing left and right. I'm sure it's the same going from Expert or Hard down to Medium. That'd be sad if you faced, say, a Silent Bob on Medium and got beat only to have him go on to the next round and get thoroughly annihilated. It just isn't fair.

Why the switch mid-way through the deal from a laggy HDTV to a standard def? That would've thrown my timing off right there.

Is it possible to get into another qualifier, or do they track your names? Maybe create a new email address or something. Just a thought.

Sorry I missed Ryu and you up at Cyber Ops. Was Boo working? Hopefully he got a little chance to talk. We've been absolutely swamped at the computer shop, so a lot of subs watching the game center for us lately.
