  1. Dynafire Opinion of the new Dropkick Murphys DLC for Guitar Hero 3

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 14 2008

As some of you may or may not know, there is a FREE song pack up on XBL marketplace right now. This pack contains 3 songs by Dropkick Murphys – “Famous for Nothing”, “(F)lannigan’s Ball”, and “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya”. Here are my overall impressions of the songs. *All of these opinions are based on the Expert difficulty note charts*

    “Famous for Nothing”
A lot of people are complaining that this song is awful and it kills your hand. I found this to be completely false. While there are a huge number of quick chords, it’s nothing that can’t be handled by alt-strumming, and if you’re just starting out on, or are not that proficient at Expert, this is a technique that will prove invaluable on tougher songs. Since a lot of the song is two-note chords, it will also help you get more comfortable with shifting your hand. It’s my least favorite of the three, but I still enjoy it.

    “(F)lannigan’s Ball
Rejoice, people, for there is a song with which you can easily get the “half a mil” achievement on! This song is packed with 3-note chords, and if you can hold a 4x multiplier for a fair portion of the song, and use starpower in good places, you will hit the 500k mark no problem. This song is pretty repetitive, but it’s not everyday that you hear guitars in tandem with bagpipes.

    “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya”
You may recognize the main riff as that of “The Ants Go Marching” or whatever it’s actually called. I am absolutely in love with this song and its note chart. The “check this” section of the song is a blast to play, and overall, the song is incredibly fun. Definitely one of my favorite GH songs ever.

"Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya" is the most popular with the folks up at Cyber Ops. I think it's because the melody is so instantly recognizable. I've seen some of our kids playing over XBox LIVE on Expert - this one is way tougher than it appears on the surface.

In fact, I think all the Dropkick Murphys songs are all a little tougher to actually play well than the note charts appear to the casual observer.

I, as I've said before, am "Mr. Medium" so at that level they're actually fun to play around with and not so frustrating.
