  1. Dynafire Midwest Gaming Classic 2010 + the haul

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 29 2010

Yesterday ZMaine, GVirus05, RyuBlitz, and myself came back from the 2010 Midwest Gaming Classic. The venue was much larger this year, encasing roughly 1/3 of the large hotel in which it was held.

My day started off with the Ben Heck experience. Ben Heck is the man you may have seen who made the 360 laptop a little over a year ago. This year, he had his newest creation, Bill Paxton pinball available for play. It was a marvelous machine, complete with fitting one-liners from Bill's movies. I asked Ben "Why Bill Paxton?". He replied simply "because he's awesome and has good one-liners". If I ever make a pinball machine, I'm going with Kurt Russell. The other reason I was in there was to get my Sega CD fixed, and it was. I blew a fuse by using an adapter with the wrong voltage, so they just jumped it as a temporary fix. As soon as I can though, I'm going to replace the fuse.

Day one in the vendor area was chaos. There were tons of people, and it was pretty hot in there. Even though the area was larger this year, the aisles were still somewhat small, and it was hard to get around for most of the morning/early afternoon.

I caught a presentation about pinball in the afternoon, and it was pretty entertaining. I wasn't there for the whole thing, but what I caught was footage of random things involving pinball. What was interesting was that there are quite a lot of advertisements that use pinball in their TV spots. It just shows that pinball still has a strong influence on our culture, even though we may not realize it. Speaking of pinball, there was a Guns n Roses machine that was played with a guitar hero controller. While a fun mechanic, I would have liked to play that machine with the normal side buttons. Still, it's nice to see that people are still experimenting with other possibilites for pinball.

Day two was a little more of the same, but there were fewer people. A lot of the vendors were making deals, and resulted in me purchasing a bit more than I had budgeted for. Still, I got a lot of things I wanted, and a lot of things I'll play further down the line. Here's the whole list:

    Gold Nintendo 64 w/gold controller
    La Pucelle Tactics PS2 sealed
    Tecmo Super Bowl NES sealed
    Morrowind Xbox sealed
    Call of Cthulhu
    Super Smash Bros. Melee
    Burgertime
    Dig Dug II
Box of random PS1 games that need resurfacing
    Official PS1 memory card sealed
    Dreamcast VMU sealed
    SNES controller boxed
    Rocket Slime DS sealed
    Saint's Row
    Mafia
    Toy Commander
    Pokemon Puzzle League
Final Fantasy III manual missing cover and slightly torn
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
    Super Off Road
    Populous
    Little Nemo Dream Master
    20 NES dust sleeves
    Super Metroid
    Blue Stinger
Herc's Adventures (I've been looking for this forever)

So, that was most of my experience. I had a good time, and look forward to going back next year.

I agree, you came home with the motherload, haha! I went ahead and comment on the individual photos, so check those out.

I'm glad you all had a good time. That's a good group of GoG members, so I have to wonder if any conversation surrounded our video game community?

Lastly, I vote you get the GoG Forum thread for this event fired up with this information. At least a few of you can discuss the event and remember all the retro-flavored fun you had at this year's Midwest Gaming Classic Wink

AHHHHHHHHH Smile Man what a haul this year Dynafire. I need to make it out to the next one. I have to free up some personal plate space and save up some money. It's a shame so many awesome video game related events happen in the month of march, but this one being closer then say gdc, pax, or a host of other events I'm going to have to make it out and see all the retro goodness.

And you sir should hold me to that. Remind me if you can for next year and if it's cool for me to tag along I'll be there.
