  1. Dynafire Under the Radar #7: Rock 'n Roll Racing

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 10 2009

It's extremely rare that I like a racing game. Most are very bland and shallow, in my opinion. This one, however, is not. Rock and Roll Racing is one of those fun, arcade-style racing games with weapons that you never see anymore. Four players race at a time, and it's your job to beat them. You race on different planets, with different terrain/obstacles in each, all while listening to classic rock tracks in glorious 16-bit sound. The only downside is that there are only four different songs, even though they are some good ones. There's Highway Star, Bad to the Bone, Paranoid, and something else I don't know the title to.

To aid you, you're able to use a variety of weapons, as well as purchase upgrades for your vehicle (or new vehicles altogether) with money you may pick up on the track, or earn from placing in the top 3. The weapons change a bit depending on which vehicle you have, but in each vehicle you have one weapon that will attack in front of you, some form of land mine, and a speed boost. Initially, you start off with a crappy vehicle with a weak laser weapon, a mine, and a speed boost, but can ultimately get missles, mines that turn into four separate mines when someone comes near them, and even heat-seeking-red-ball-things. Each weapon is refilled when you start a new lap.

Rinse, repeat, and you've got a game. I wish I could write more about this title, but I think I've already covered it well enough. You race, make money, blow people up ocassionally, and that's it. It's a very good game however, and one I would recommend to anyone. It's available on the SNES and on GBA.
