Midwest Gaming Classic 2009
Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 28 2009
This past weekend, ZMaine and myself took a little road trip to the 2009 Midwest Gaming Classic in Oconomowoc Wisconsin. Neither of us had ever been there before, so we weren't really sure what to expect. Upon arrival, we entered through the hotel lobby and soon found ourselves in a fairly lengthy line. Thankfully, it went by pretty quickly and we were on our way inside.
The vendor area was absolutely packed with people, presumably trying to get their hands on rare games before someone else could snatch them. It was anarchy. The crowd thinned out a bit as the day wore on though, and that is when we struck. All told, I spent around $250 on lots of different stuff. Here's a complete list of what I ended up with.
Sega Genesis/Sega CD combo
Time Gal - Sega CD
Ground Zero Texas - Sega CD
Eternal Champions - Sega CD
Microcosm - Sega CD
Double Switch - Sega CD
Virtua Fighter 2 - Sega Saturn
Command and Conquer - Sega Saturn - (Nod disc)
Parasite Eve II official strategy guide
Chrono Trigger - SNES - complete except for manual
Valkyria Chronicles - PS3 - NEW
Bionic Commando - NES - complete
Bionic Commando poster signed by producers
Infinite Undiscovery promo artwork
Dragon Quest VIII slime window sticker - (yes, it is now on my car)
Gunstar Heroes - Genesis
Toe Jam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron - Genesis
Batman - NES
Megaman 2 - NES
Gradius - NES
Ninja Gaiden II - NES
Bible Adventures - NES
Xenogears - PS1 - complete
Legaia 2: Duel Saga - PS2
Super R-Type - SNES
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - N64
2 factory sealed copies of F-Zero for the SNES
a box for Blaster Master on the NES
The game room was another great part of the exhibit, featuring dozens of pinball and arcade machines, all set to free play. If you could find an open machine, you could hop right in there and play it. Right next to that was the game "museum", and this is where things get truly epic.
The game museum had nearly every single home console on display, and many of them were playable. Surprisingly, the title I had the most fun with was Vietnam 1975 on the Neo Geo. Steel Battalion (noted for its incredible controller "console") was on display, which I really wanted to try out, but there was always someone on it. We got to see some incredible systems, ranging from the original Atari all the way up to Xbox and PS2 development/debug kits.
Modding demigod Ben Heck was in his little corner too, doing who knows what with piles of electronics. He's the guy that made the Xbox 360 laptop, in case you were wondering. Other "celebs" on hand were Trickman Terry and Sushi X from the former EGM magazine. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to see them speak or talk with them, because I'm a damn idiot and didn't read the schedule. I used to read EGM way back when and practically used to idolize those guys. It would have been great to get some autographs.
On top of all that, there were free goodie bags given to the first 1500 participants with a Killzone 2 T-shirt (in XL sizes - yaus!), a copy of Feet of Fury for the Dreamcast, and several fliers from sponsors. Ben got a GoG flier in each of the bags which had the homepage banner on the front of it, and a schedule of events on the back which was very handy. I'm sure we'll see an increase of traffic to the site this week as people return home and recover from this great event.
So anyway, that's most of what happened at the Midwest Gaming Classic in our experience. I took a couple dozen pics, and will probably have those up tomorrow.

Posted On Mar 24 2009Could you expand on the GoG Fliers that were sent for this event? We had 1,500 overnighted to them, so I'm extra eager to hear how they were used and what else where in the goodie bags that they were supposed to be in
Other than that, it sounds like a great time and it was cool getting updates from you while we held the GoG tournament here in Iowa. I like hearing 9.5 and 10 out of 10 ratings from you two and I'll look forward to some additional reviews on the games and accesorries you picked up in at this year's Midwest Gaming Classic!
ZMaine...where's your thoughts my friend -
