  1. Dynafire Kidsfest - just chilling

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 07 2009

So today started with ZMaine and I waking up at around 6am. That wasn't so bad though. We quickly got on the road for a two hour drive to Des Moines to help out with Kidsfest 2009, held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Varied Industries Building.

The day started out kind of slow, which can be expected. After all, I know I hardly ever wake up before 9am on Saturdays anymore, and I'm sure a lot of kids/parents are the same way. As the day has progressed though, we've had a very active area all day.

We've got 4 gaming stations set up. There are two Xbox 360s, with Guitar Hero 3 on one, and Guitar Hero World Tour on the other. There was a tournament a little bit ago, but I don't really know all the details about it. On top of the 360's, there are also two Wiis, each playing Mario Kart. The two Zachs (RyuBlitz and ZMaine) are assisting people in getting games set up, as well as teaching kids how to play if they don't already know.

Something neat I've observed is the varying ways some of these kids play games. Some are fairly static while playing (like me), but some get WAAAAAY into it. In Guitar Hero, they'll miss practically everything, but will rock out like they're performing an actual show. Same deal with Mario Kart. Some stand still and simply rotate the wheel while others will put their whole body into the turn. It's also nice to see so many parents willing to learn a new hobby. I've seen so many different ages represented today, it's amazing.

But anyway, that's what's been going on in my day so far. ZMaine and I should be here until about 5 or 6pm, then we need to prep for the two hour return trip. All in all, it's been an enjoyable day.

In my defense, I didn't realize that the crust was included in the challenge. I got the rest of it...

Thanks again for helping out, guys. It was great being able to see everyone again.

Hmm...You didn't try to get the whole slice in your mouth at once? That's just as pathetic as Ryu failing!!!

Anyway, about the kids putting their whole bodies into turning the wheel...When we first got Super Mario Bros. 3 my mom was obsessed with the game. I distinctly remember her leaning while jumping and I asked why. She was on an airship or something I believe, but she was most definately focusing on the game, so when she answered she said "Because it helps you go farther". Now I was only like 5 or 6 at the time, so being the stupid little idiot I was, I believed this for another 3-4 years IIRC Laughing

Thanks for joining us today Brandon and I'm glad you enjoyed yourself...although I still think you could have gotten the whole pizza slive in your mouth at once, unlike mr. RyuBlitz, haha.

Hope you have safe travels and thanks again!
