  1. Dynafire 50 hours of gameplay nearly ruined by a mushroom

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Feb 22 2009

I know it sounds weird, so let me explain. I'm working on beating all of the unbeaten games in my collection. I was fairly far along in Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage for the N64, so I decided to beat that. The part in question requires you to traverse a narrow hallway to reach an objective. There is a random mushroom in the middle of this passageway. I didn't have any problems going into this area, but coming out, I couldn't get around the stupid mushroom. I ran against it at all sorts of different angles before FINALLY lucking out and clipping through it. It doesn't help that this is the ONLY way out of the area too.

First, I was extremely relieved. I have a considerable time investment in this game, and for it to be ruined by not letting me around a mushroom that should never have been put there would have made me throw the cartridge against the wall. This is actually the second time I've tried to beat it. The first game was lost in a tragic corrupted save file incident many a year ago, and that was infuriating too. Second, I got a bit annoyed. Was there any reason for putting that mushroom there? There's an entire patch about 20 feet away, so what's with this "rogue mushroom"? Does this mushroom serve the sinister purpose of luring unsuspecting adventurers into an inescapable trap? It just...doesn't need to be there, and I don't know what the hell the developers were thinking.

The game itself is mostly bad, but I kind of like the combat system. Other than that, there's not much going for it. The graphics are pretty ugly even by N64 standards, and the controls are really clunky. Also, the story (and usually the dialogue) make absolutely no sense. It's supposed to change with your speechcraft skill, but you usually end up with conversations that reap little information regardless of your aptitude. Thankfully, I'm in the final stretch, so I can cross this off the list and finish something else. Very Happy

PS: Game developers, please don't put random solid objects in hallways that could obstruct progress. Thanks Wink

One of your best video game reviews so far Wink

The title got me reading and the content had me laughing. I've been in those frustrating situations though, before...where there's a simple solution or else you've found a pesky bug/glitch!

Is it strange that when I read the title it made perfect sense? And no, I've never even heard of the game before Laughing
