  1. Dynafire Braid Review

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Feb 07 2009

I've put this off for way too long, but here is my full review of Braid, available on Xbox Live Arcade and the PC.

The normal gameplay is traditional platforming a la Super Mario Bros. However, there is one mechanic that makes it differ greatly from other platformers. You have the ability to rewind time. If you mess up a jump, or find you needed to keep a certain enemy alive, you can simply rewind time to before you missed the jump or killed the enemy. While this does sound like just another way to restart the level, there are other ways you need to use this power. After the first world, you will come across enemies and objects that are unaffected by time. In this case, using the rewind feature does nothing to the object, which you can use to complete the puzzles the game throws at you.

The puzzles are fairly straightforward at first, but get much more complex as the game progresses. Some of them are very hard to figure out, but you should be able to experiment and get them eventually. On top of the ability to rewind time, the levels themselves act differently. The 4th world, for example has time stopped. When you move forward, it advances time. When you move backwards, it rewinds time.

The music in the game is a great mixture of classical pieces. Lots of string sections, all instrumentals. Each song fits its level perfectly to create a great atmosphere. The artwork is also amazing. I'm sure everything is hand-painted, and it all looks very good. In fact, the art is probably my favorite part of the game.

The one bad thing about the game is that it ends. I wish I could play this forever. Wink It's also a bit on the short side, but every minute of the game is fun to play.

Yeah, that's pretty barebones as far as content, but I don't want to spoil much for people that may get this. Definitely give the demo a try, and if you even like it a little bit, buy the game.

    Overall: 8.5/10

Remember that night we were both going to grab this game? Well it looks like you came through first!

I do want to check this game out though, so it looks like I'll be picking up some additional MS Points soon. Thanks for the quick review sir!
