  1. Dynafire This week's compulsive buy: Penny Arcade Episode 1

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jan 12 2009

Since I have about 4500 points sitting in my account again, I decided to repay the guys at www.penny-arcade.com (some hilarious comics if you don't mind some profanity and occasional poo jokes) for giving me free comics for the last few years by buying their game. There are two episodes to Penny Arcade Adventures: on the Rain-Slick Precipace (sp?) of Darkness. The first episode runs a whopping 1600 points, while the second is at a more reasonable 1200 points.

The game itself is a pseudo-RPG. It has leveling, and a battle system, but is a fairly shallow experience. Thankfully, combat is pretty fun, and the character animations are priceless. You also get the traditional witty banter between Gabe and Tycho, which occasionally is hilarious.

A lot of the humor you will not get though, unless you have read the comics. I really want to write more, but I don't want to spoil the game (even though I know most will not buy it at 1600 points). I will just say this - It's a good game, but I don't think it's $20 good. Granted, the game does have replayability to it. Combat is surprisingly fun and interactive, and never once got dull in the 8 or so hours I played it over the weekend. I love the artwork that went into making it, and it did make me laugh out loud a few times. The one thing I didn't like about it, is that there is hardly any music in the game. You get some music when you go to different locations, but that's it.

Overall, I'm pleased with my impulse buy, and will probably end up playing through it again.
