    Resident Evil 4

I've always liked the Resident Evil series. The prospect of a man-made virus turning people into the mindless undead was a completely new concept back when the first RE game was released, and drew my interest. The setting of the first game was great. A spooky, secluded mansion in the middle of a mountain range was a perfect spot for these twisted experiments, and it was just a really convincing atmosphere. The puzzles were a nice touch, even if they were a bit cheesy in their execution at times. (who uses a set of 4 medallions to unlock a door, anyway?) Resident Evil 4 did away with puzzles for the most part, and turned it into more of an action-oriented type of game.

It also removed a key feature of every previous RE game; zombies. It's true, you will find zero zombies in Resident Evil 4, but that's not to say that there aren't other "things" instead. This game took everything that wasn't so great about RE and improved it dramatically. The best change, in my opinion, was introducing the ability to free-aim. In previous titles, you could only aim on the X-axis, and had very limited aim on the Y-axis, which didn't really convey the sense of urgency and survival the games were going for. Essentially, RE4 is a slower-paced third-person shooter.

In RE4, you play as Leon Kennedy, the hero from Resident Evil 2. It turns out that Leon is now a full-fledged federal agent, and is sent to find the president's missing daughter in a remote village. Within the first two minutes, the **** hits the fan and your adventure begins. The story in this game is great, and keeps you wondering what will happen up until the very end.

After you finish the story mode of the game, you unlock the "professional" mode (which makes enemies hurt you more, and if you start a new game, you can't buy body armor), as well as a minigame called The Mercenaries. The Mercenaries plays the same as the normal game, but with a twist. Waves of infinitely spawning enemies will continue to hunt you around a small area, while a timer counts down. When time is up, the game ends. The goal is to try to get a high score by chaining kills together, as well as collect timers around the map to keep going longer. Each level also has an enemy that is much tougher than the regular enemies, that may or may not be able to kill you instantly. It helps to know your environment and know where your enemies are when you play this, as one misstep could get you killed. It's extremely fun, and I wasted many hours on it after I beat the main story a couple times. Oh, you can also play as five different characters, each with different starting equipment.

The replay value of RE4 is enormous, and it's still fun to dig it out of my collection to play every now and then.

This is one of the only Gamecube games I've played, but I did enjoy it. I can't say I've played much more than that one, but I did enjoy the game. I think it has a nice element of horror and action.
