    Halo: Combat Evolved

Gaming seems to be leaning towards shooters nowadays, and there is a good reason why. Halo: CE was a fantastic game. Whether you prefer multiplayer or single-player campaigns, this game delivered both with perfection, and sold a ton of copies. Naturally, a lot of companies flock to where the money is, and it seems like everyone has made a shooter or attempted to created a "Halo killer". Sure, the pistol was insanely unbalanced, but the gameplay was still fun. This experience only got better when you got a LAN set up and played with a bunch of friends. I miss the days of the LAN parties I used to go to, as they were some of the best times I ever had with gaming. Xbox Live and the like just don't compare to being in the same room as your opponents - especially when you know all of them personally.

The campaign in this game is my personal favorite out of all the first-person shooters I've played. The environment on Halo is intriguing, to say the least. The first time I stepped off the escape craft and onto Halo, I was awestruck. What was this ring-world doing in the middle of space? Why is the air breatheable? What significance does it have? Who built this thing? Of course, the game only hints at answering those questions, which left it open for Halo 2 to develop on. I'd really like to elaborate, but I won't spoil the story for anyone who hasn't played this yet.

The game also had an unexpected effect on me. When I first started the campaign, I had never played a shooter with dual analog sticks before. Prior to Halo, my only FPS experience was Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64. During the control setup, I accidentally set my Y-axis movement to inverted (pressing up looks down, and down looks up). I didn't know any better though, and learned to adapt to it. Now, I can't play any FPS or first-person game without look inversion enabled. Interestingly enough, I still play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark without inversion. This paragraph doesn't have any real importance, I just thought I'd throw that little tidbit out there.

This was the one game that single-handedly sold most Xbox consoles, and it's just a great game all-around. If you like Halo 2 or 3, you MUST play this. Even if you don't care for campaigns (BEN Wink ), the multiplayer is a fun mix of old-school and new (though you can't play multiplayer on Xbox Live), and the co-op campaign is really fun too.

Now seems like a good time to admit that I don't remember playing much...or any of Halo 1! I was still a fan of the PS2 and didn't play the Xbox much until Halo 2 came out.

I'm sure I played a few levels and maybe a couple of matches, but I feel like a bad gamer because I need to get through the whole Halo story for how much I enjoy the game Surprised

SIDE NOTE: I still have not beaten Halo 3's campaign, but I'm bad about that when a game is ready to rock online Wink
