  1. Dynafire My Top Ten Favorite Games of All-Time pt.6

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 19 2008

This game, I believe needs no introduction. Everyone and their mother knows what Guitar Hero is. Of all the rhythm games I've played (which is pretty much limited to Guitar Hero and Rock Band :P), this one is the most memorable and enjoyable. This was the game that single-handedly got me hooked into the rhythm game genre, and helped me become a decent fake guitarist.

The setlist is great. It includes lots of older classics like "Message in a Bottle" by The Police, "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers, and of course, "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. There is a good mix of other music genres too, such as instrumentals, metal, and alternative. Granted, most of the songs in the game are covers done by Harmonix's in-house bands, but they are all done pretty well. The difficulty progression of the songs in the career mode is near perfect too. In GHIII, I felt the difficulty wasn't too bad, until tier 8. Going from tier 7 to tier 8, you notice a huge difference in the amount of difficulty, and I've seen constant complaints from beginners/novices about it (Raining Blood, specifically). This is not so in GHII. Everything is nice and smooth right up to the final encore. Even in the final tiers, you can pass pretty much anything by hoarding starpower and flailing your fingers through hard parts.

GHII is just plain fun. I could care less about going for high scores in this game, as well as Rock Band 1 & 2, which is why I think I like them so much. While Rock Band 1 may have been really easy on guitar, it didn't make me feel like I should be going for high scores or FC's. GHIII did, and as a result, I didn't enjoy it that much. I find that it's much more entertaining to be able to pop in the game, sit back, and just play the music.

If you don't own this installment of the GH franchise, you should. If you're looking to get into these games, GHII is probably the best place to start.
