  1. Dynafire My Top Ten Favorite Games of All-Time pt.5

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 18 2008

Anyone who has been around the GoG for a while knows that I love Morrowind. I did the Morrowind challenge a while back, where I attempted to make the game fairly difficult with various handicaps. I'm doing another challenge right now, with the difficulty jacked up to 100, and I had one hour to gather equipment on normal difficulty, then never again going back to civilization. I managed to get some good stuff, but still get killed pretty easy. It's really fun to play like that though, and I plan on playing this game until my disc drive dies. (At which point I will bring out my 2nd xbox and play some more Smile )

Initially, I utterly hated this game. I thought the world was too big, enemies were too strong, got incredibly frustrated not being able to hit enemies with my sword and put the game away. It was almost TWO YEARS later that I finally sat down to give it a chance, and realized how amazing it really is.

I'm not sure if Morrowind's world is bigger than Oblivion's, but there is a lot more content in Morrowind's world, with plenty of interesting sights to see. I realize now that I was actually intimidated by the sheer magnitude of everything going on in this world. Up to this point, I had never played a game that basically pushed me out on my own and said "good luck". You get very brief instructions on what to do, which is to meet with a man in a nearby town. You don't have to do this immediately though, and can go do some exploring if you want. In fact, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, and you won't be penalized at all. (Just try to avoid killing important NPC's. Wink )

Speaking of NPC's, there are around 3,000 of them in the game, each with their own names. Bethesda really went above and beyond, even though some NPC's are pretty generic and most are just bandits/outlaws there to be killed. There are even a bunch of different books laying around, and each one has text to it. Most of them are pretty short in length (just a few pages), but there are a few books that are long enough to be short stories. There are a ton of unique items to find, which gives plenty of incentive to explore plain-looking caves and dungeons. Overall, this is a great investment for anyone looking for a time-killer or a good RPG in general.
