  1. Dynafire My Top Ten Favorite Games of All-Time pt.4

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 17 2008

This is the one game on the N64 that is mandatory to own. The first attempt at taking The Legend of Zelda into the 3rd dimension is done extremely well, and this is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.

At this point, most people should be familiar with the story that drives the Zelda series. Zelda is in danger for one reason or another, and Ganon (or Ganondorf, whatever.) is usually responsible for it. You take on the role of Link, with the ultimate goal of rescuing Zelda and defeating Ganon. There are a bunch of different dungeons you need to conquer in order to progress, and they are usually full of puzzles, enemies, and of course, a boss.

You initially start out as kid Link, who is ten years old. Upon advancing a bit in the game, stuff happens, and you are propelled 7 years into the future to a world ruled by Ganondorf. However, you can still go back to the past via the Temple of Time and can influence things in the future. For example, there are patches of dirt where you can plant magic beans. They don't do anything while you're a child, but come back as an adult, and they're fully grown. You also have to alternate between kid Link and adult Link to solve a few of the more complex puzzles in the game.

The ocarina is a musical instrument you receive shortly after starting the game. Over time, you will learn songs that are necessary to complete puzzles, access hidden areas, etc. Zelda's song for example, is required to beat the Water Temple as an adult. You can also learn songs that teleport you to different parts of the game, or have other effects. The coolest thing about it though, is that you can freestyle with it. You don't just pick a song and play it, you actually get to play the song yourself. They aren't all that complicated (6-8 notes long), but you can make your own songs if you feel the need to. The analog stick will change the pitch too, so there are tons of possibilities.

Another fun thing about the game are the glitches and exploits you can find if you really try. There are a few of them I remember, but not quite how to do them. For one, you can equip any weapon while riding Epona by getting your sword unequipped during the final battle, saving, and reloading. Doing that will start you outside the castle, but still sword-less (don't worry, you still have the sword in your inventory). Hop on Epona and you can use anything attached to a C-button. You can also steal the fishing rod from the fishing pond (only on the gold cartridge version though, for some reason.) by equiping the hover boots, running out onto the pond, and casting the line before you drop into the water. The viewpoint will be looking at the lure, but you can still run around. Find the door and exit. Voila, you now own the fishing rod - just don't unequip it or you lose it. There's another exploit that can make the game playable in first-person, but I don't remember how to do it.

So yeah, great environments, great gameplay, great music, great everything.
