  1. Dynafire Rock Band drum pad silencers

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 17 2008

*Note*- the drums in the pic don't have the pads on them. I'll put up an updated pic tonight.

Edit II: apparently, I am unable to delete the normal drum set photo from this chronicle. This may be a bug to stomp for RyuBlitz.

Since I recently got my drums to become functional, I decided to deal with the noise issue while I was at it. Everyone who owns a Rock Band drum set knows how loud they can be. I bought a set of first-party drum silencing pads, and while they do help in quieting the impact noise, they reduce sensitivity, and I had to go through more trouble to get them to work again.

After installing the silencing pads, I noticed that my blue pad was back to it's old "drop every 4th note" BS, so I took the pad off and loosened the sensor cage a little bit. The theory I had was that it would vibrate more, and set off the sensor easier. For the most part, I was right. This worked in getting it to be functional again, but now I get a rattling noise whenever I hit it. I had to do adjust other pads as well, though I just barely had to loosen them. I may mess with the blue pad some more, since none of the others have that annoying rattle, but I'm really just thankful I don't have to worry much about dropped notes anymore.

Other than my stupid blue one, the pads are awesome. The drums still make some noise, but nowhere near as much as they did without the pads on them. I was a little concerned at first though. When I went to get them at Best Buy, I looked at the drum set they had for one of their displays. This set had silencers on it, but a couple fell off, and had left rings of adhesive on the plastic, as well as the drum head itself. Upon further inspection, the pads they were using were cheap, 3rd-party pads. DO NOT GET THESE.

Fortunately, the Harmonix brand pads are much better. They peel right off the drumset with a little force, and don't leave any nasty residue on your drums. I'd really recommend these if you live with someone that complains about the noise or for when you have friends over so they can actually hear the soundtrack.

These retail for $20, which is kind of a rip-off in my opinion. They should have just made the drums quieter and we wouldn't need these. Regardless, they are a great product that work very well at reducing noise.
