  1. Dynafire Anticipation for new games

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 27 2008

There have been plenty of times in the past where I have been extremely excited about getting a new game, then been utterly disappointed upon playing it. Since Fallout 3 is one of these games (though I hope it will be good), I'm trying to keep my expectations somewhat low, and here's why.

Let's go back to 1999. I had just gotten my PS1 (I always jump on the bandwagon late) and was thoroughly enjoying Final Fantasy VII, by playing through it almost religously. Seriously, if you asked me any question about the game, anything from enemy HP, to AP to master materia, I knew it. Naturally, when I heard about Final Fantasy VIII, I ordered it well in advance, and was expecting the same kind of epic adventure that FFVII gave me. Once I got it, I was incredibly disappointed. However, I attribute this to having my expectations set so high. Ironically, I played through FFVIII again a few years later, and found out that it was actually a really good game, when you aren't trying to compare it to anything else.

The same thing happened between Halo and Halo 2. I got the special edition Halo Xbox on a whim, which was out roughly 5 months prior to Halo 2. I absolutely LOVED Halo. The campaign is one of the most engrossing things ever, and there were many nights where I would stay up until about 4AM playing it. Eventually, my friends invited me to LAN parties, and those were some of the funnest memories I have. Naturally, I was expecting another epic adventure from Halo 2. Instead, I was let down again. The story became convoluted, and I just didn't care about what ultimately became of humanity. Halo 3 was the same kind of disappointment. Don't get me wrong, the multiplayer aspect is still done pretty well, but I'm a single player kind of person, and both H2 and H3's campaign completely lacked anything that made the first game so great.

With these two games in mind, I have refrained from reading too much, or watching too many gameplay videos for Fallout 3. This is one of those games where I went from "couldn't care less" to "holy crap I want this" all in a matter of weeks. I have been waiting patiently for another Elder Scrolls game, but there has been very little news in regard to that series. Seeing the game described as "Oblivion with guns", I was curious. A few articles later, it sounds like everything I could want in an RPG. Hopefully it turns out to be a great game, but I'm not going to be expecting the impossible only to be let down again.

To be honest, I was pretty let down with Oblivion too. It was waaaaaaaay too easy, in my opinion. There was also little to no reward for venturing off the beaten path, as most loot and enemies level up with you. You never truly get the feeling of being an unstoppable death machine, and just end up going through the motions over and over again. It was still an okay game, but nothing compared to the masterpiece that is Morrowind.

I know what you mean. I do this with movies once in awhile as well!

Luckily for me with the Halo situation, I'm much more of a multiplayer type of guy, so the campaign doesn't matter as much (or really at all) for me. You know I still haven't played through the Halo 3 campaign, lol!
