  1. Dynafire GH: Metallica preview tournament

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 25 2008

Today was one of those days where I woke up early, and was too excited to go back to sleep, then made a 4 hour round-trip to play a plastic guitar. In other words, today rocked!

I met up with ZMaine at Coral Ridge Mall and we then took my vehicle to CyberOps in Des Moines. We got registered, got some warmup time in, and met up with Silent Bob, RyuBlitz, and Ben. There were new friends made as well, such as AWolter.

I could go on forever about this kind of stuff, but I'll try to keep this short. I won the tournament. Granted, there were only around 8 people present, but every single one was a competent Guitar Hero player. There were no matches played that I would consider a "blowout", and that is very rare for tournaments. It ended up being RyuBlitz and myself in the finals, where we played two very close matches. Ultimately though, I soloed harder and ended up with more points. For winning, I got a ton of goodies. I got an awesome GH shirt and hat (I'm not even a hat wearing kind of person, but this will get worn), some spending cash, and METALLICA TICKETS.

Unfortunately, I am going to be unable to attend the concert tomorrow night, so I gave my tickets to AWolter. I really don't mind it at all, and would much rather see them go to someone who will use them as opposed to pawning them off for cash. Enjoy the show!

Anyway, I had a great time at the tournament, even though there weren't that many contestants. Regardless, it is definitely worth going to CyberOps tournaments, because their tournament format is near perfect, and no one there (from my experience) trash talks. Thanks to Silent Bob, Boobacca, and all the CyberOps employees that helped run this tournament. I can't wait until the next one!

After the tournament, ZMaine, RyuBlitz, and I played a bit of Rock Band, where I somehow failed Panic Attack :/. After that, we went a few doors down to the Leaning Tower of Pizza, which I have to say is a pretty cheesy name, but their food makes up for it. After lunch/dinner, ZMaine and I took off on our 2 hour pilgrimage back to Iowa City.

After we returned to Iowa City, we blew about an hour in the Best Buy at Coral Ridge, where Zach displayed his awesome Super Mario Bros. songs skills on the keyboard, and I dominated Green Grass and High Tides on BB's Rock Band setup. I tried in vain to find someone breaking the street date on Fallout 3, but no one did. sad face.

(Anyone looking for a cheap guitar controller needs to go to BB NOW. They had a ton of Xplorers on clearance for $23. $23!!! That is INSANE. So insane in fact, it was hard for me to walk away without one. If I didn't have a perfectly functional Les Paul guitar, I'd have gotten an Xplorer in a heartbeat.)

After that, we parted ways, and I made the half hour drive home, and that brings us to....now. All in all, a great day. I really like these tournaments, and ironically, it's not really the competition that draws me in. I like to meet people that share a common interest, as well as hang out with friends I rarely get to see. It was great to see everyone again, and I look forward to meeting up again at the next event!

(sorry to post so late, been very busy :P)

Even though I feel I didn't play my best, the tournament was very fun. It was awesome meeting you all, and I'm so thankful that Brandon gave me those tickets. The concert was one of the best nights of my life! ( THANK YOU!! I LOVE METALLICA Very Happy )

I was in awe of RyuBlitz's lefty GH skill, didn't know there was such a good lefty out there to be honest. Can't wait for the next tournament!

Yeah, these smaller tournaments are sometimes more enjoyable overall. Nice work on the win Dynafire and Zach already had tickets, so I suppose it all worked out for the best, haha.

Silent Bob, thanks for always being so hospitable and supportive of GoG at these events. I'm sure those GoG Skins will find good homes and let me know when you're out Wink

It's great to have Link and AWolter joining us and I'm sure we'll see you guys again soon!

Congrats, Brandon, on a hard-won victory. The match that had the most drama was the RyuBlitz / AWolter showdown in the semis.

They took their match all the way to a 3rd song Battle Mode tie-breaker that took nearly to the end of the song to determine a winner.

BOTH of these guys were incredible. Zach, of course, we've seen work his magic many a times. Young Mr. Wolter made the trip from Cedar Rapids area after seeing the post on ScoreHero. Where have you been hiding, man? Wowzers, this guy can play!

We LOVE having GH tournaments for the one of the reasons Dynafire stated - it's a friendlier bunch of guys, lots less trash talking than a Halo or COD crowd. There seems to be more comradery and pure enjoyment of the game.

We had a much smaller turnout than expected, but like Brandon said the skill level represented was phenomenal.

In other news, my son Brandon won the Medium division against the younger Wolter brother. They were neck and neck on both songs; a couple missed notes to break a long streak or a bad Star Power path were the only differences. Both played really well.

Again, it was great seeing the old gang again. Ryu, ZMaine, Dynafire - you guys are class acts in my book.

Ben, thanks for coming to lend your support, and THANKS for the Xplorer GoG skins - they were well received by the competitors. Glad you could get a couple more signed up for the GoG while you were at it too!
