Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 26 2009

Battlefield Heroes is a third person class based shooter with RPG elements, character customization, and a new bold business model.

    Game play
Created by Dice and published by EA, BFH holds on to the original battlefield formula for game play and adds a few twists. BFH is a capture point and ticket based game, each team starts with 50 tickets and every time someone dies that team loses a ticket. To spice things up capturing flags adds a multiplayer to those kills. So in its basic form, kill people, when you have more flags then the enemy you get extra credit for your kills. Also just like other battlefield games there are three classes to choice from each having unique things about them.

    The Twist in BFH
So what makes BFH so great, well there are a few things. First it’s free, yep free. Go to the website make an account download the small 300+ Meg app and play away. This is the new bold business model that EA is trying. Let people play for free and they will make their money through micro transactions by charging for character clothing.

BFH also has a character leveling system. As you play you get XP for various actions you perform; damaging an enemy, capturing an enemy flag, and even for healing your teammates. This XP adds up and then you advance in level. The level cap is currently 30 and every 2 levels you get a HP. It’s these Hero points that give your character extra abilities that make you stronger. Each of the 3 classes has 5 abilities you can put points in. Drag these abilities to your action bar and at the same time you add layers to the game play we are not used to seeing in Third Person Shooters.

Next up are Valor Points, VP are rewarded for in game actions. You can spend VP in the store to buy things like new weapons, bandages, and wrenches (to repair vehicles), and even a limited amount of clothing.

Finally there are Battle Funds (BF) these are how you spend real money in the game and give you access to tons of customization elements in the game. If you really want to stand out in the crowd spend a few bucks for some BFs. It’s important to know that spending BF (real money) does not give you an advantage in the game it simply makes you look different, the clothes you buy have no stat altering elements on them.

    Overall
BFH is a great game for free! The biggest problems with it are that it’s still in the open beta stage. Sometimes it’s hard to join games, and the user interface can be confusing. However, it’s free and once you get into the game it’s just plain fun. Add to this add the ability to check detailed stats about your characters on the website and some basic group (clan) support and you have the foundation for what could become a casual and competitive game.

Note that this is a very quick look at BFH and hopefully its sparked your interest in the game enough to go sign up and give it a try.

Here are some screen shots of the website and interface. Are you intrigued yet?

This is a very good review indeed. I think you touched on all of the most important aspects of the game. I would add, however, that I think they need a few more maps to work with. I can only assume that more content is in the works, as this game is still rather new yet. The pictures are a nice touch, by the way. Wink
