  1. Dynafire The Orange Box is awesome

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 07 2008

I'm going to try not to drone on too long about this. I've been pretty busy lately, and I still need to do like 70 more chronicles, so yeah.

Basically, I've had The Orange Box for a couple of months now, but until last week, I had only played Portal (which is freaking amazing - everyone should be required to play this at least once).

However, I finally got back into Half-Life 2 last week, as I was in an achievement-nabbing sort of mood. It turns out that this is one of the best FPS's I've ever played. The story is a dark one, with lots of elements that create a tense (and sometimes frightening) atmosphere. The first few hours of the game pretty tame, but as you progress, it gets much more dark and eerie. I'll just leave it at that for now, to avoid spoilers. Trust me though, if you are looking for a good single player campaign, this game has it.

I can say some things about the weapons without spoiling the game though. There are traditional weapons you will aquire during the game, such as a pistol, SMG, shotgun, and grenades, and they usually do what you'd expect. There are however, other weapons that are pretty unique to the game, and add a bit of fun to it. The first of these unique weapons is the gravity gun. This gun lets you manipulate most objects by grabbing them and then throwing them with brutal force (cinder blocks for example, are usually fatal with a direct hit). There are parts of the game where you have to use it to navigate certain areas as well. The crossbow is another weapon I haven't seen in many other games. Gears of War had the torque bow, but this is a bit different. This crossbow acts a lot more like a sniper rifle, and appears to shoot super-heated chunks of re-bar. When these hit your target, they will get pinned to the wall if they're close enough. The only thing that sucks about it is that you won't find a whole lot of ammo for it. Another fun weapon is the rocket launcher. Usually, when a game has a rocket laucher, it fires its projectile in a straight line, right? Well, this one is laser-guided. After you fire the rocket, it will go in whatever direction you look. Very handy for getting guys behind cover when you get used to it. There are a couple others, but you'll just have to play the game to see what they are.

I still haven't had a chance to play Team Fortress 2, but I'll write a bit about it when I play it.

Definitely pick this up if FPS's are your thing. TOB has 5 games in it, and I can say that at least 3 of them are fantastic (I only say 3 because I haven't played HL2-ep.2 or TF2 yet). You should be able to get this for less than $30 used now. I should also mention that this game has 99 achievements to unlock, too. A lot of them are fun and interesting, such as "kill an enemy with a toilet" or "disintigrate 15 soldiers in a combine energy ball field".
