Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 31 2008

Saturday was freaking awesome. I was looking forward to the Frets of Fury tournament for a good month or so, and I was both excited and nervous about it. Zach Maine ended up coming up there with me, and though he ended up getting eliminated in his first match, he said he had fun. I ended up losing against Palpatine (Matt) in the semi-finals. More on the tournament in a bit, though. WARNING: this is LOOOOOOOONG.

My first impression of CyberOps was “wow”. There’s plenty of room available, nice couches, plenty of systems, very clean, etc. Plus, Chris and Brian (Silent Bob and Boobacca) are incredibly nice and sociable guys. I could go on all day about how great that store is. Hopefully I’ll be able to come up there again sometime soon.

I’m not sure how many players ended up entering the tournament, but there were quite a few people there. Still, the tournament was done in just a couple of hours. Everything was run really smooth, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Like Chris said in his other chronicle, there were a lot of really good expert players present. Every person I saw looked like they had a real shot at winning. Each of the players I played against gave me a real run for my money, so great job to everyone who participated!

The first opponent I played was Leilong. (I don’t remember your real name – sorry!) He picked Radio Song, and I ended up winning by like 5,000 points. I chose Knights of Cydonia for the second song. There were a couple of lead changes, as well as him having a great run on the alt strumming parts. I still managed to win on that one as well, though I don’t remember the scores. The second opponent (also don’t remember his name – sorry.) wanted me to pick first, so I went with My Curse. He was keeping up with me for a while, but I eventually pulled ahead and stayed there. For his song, he picked Mauvais Garcon. Again, this one was close right up to the end. There were a couple of lead changes, with him being in the lead most of the time. I ended up winning it by a mere 4,000 points.

Then came Matt and my defeat. He picked Impulse for his song, and I believe he was in the lead the entire time after the section right before all the green notes. (He hit it – I didn’t) The scores were fairly close at the end, though he still had a good 15k on me. For my song, I went with Don’t Hold Back. He ended up hitting all of Phazer I, which got him an extra starpower phrase and a bunch of points since I messed it up. From there, it was pretty much over. I might have had a chance if I’d have hit Phazer II under starpower, or if he would have messed up on the section with all the triple chords near the end, but that didn’t happen. I think the score difference was around 10-15k again. Nice job Matt.

In the finals, Matt and RyuBlitz (Zach E.) won their chosen songs, taking it into battle mode on Number of the Beast. Both of them played really well, but in the end, Matt got the win. Afterwards, a bunch of us went out to eat some Chinese food, which is documented in a little more detail in Chris’s chronicle. I had a great time on Saturday, and I look forward to meeting up with you guys again at the next big tournament!

After we finished our conversations at the Chinese place, Zach M and I went to Cam’s house to hang out for the night, since we were already halfway across the state. Most of the time consisted of playing Guitar Hero, or watching Code Monkeys. (Which is hilarious, btw.) We did a bunch of Pro Face-off matches, then eventually did some Co-op stuff. We ended up unlocking the 700k and 1M point achievements on Ernten Was Wer Saen, (uh, that’s probably spelled wrong) and also managed to put together some decent runs on Through the Fire and Flames and The Devil Went Down to Georgia (4 stars on both). Thanks for having us over to round out a great weekend, Cam!

I’ll get some photos up sometime this week.

It was really good to meet you in person. I know Brian really enjoyed getting a chance to chat with you and some of the other GoG / Score Hero guys, as did I.

We've poured a lot of ourselves into the game center, so we were both thrilled to read how well it was received from those who hadn't been up before.

Rest assured we'll be planning more GH tournaments. As we grow, so will the tournaments. I can't complain about the tournout at all. I hope some of our summer tournaments are HUGE. There won't be any excuse not to be able to travel a little bit in the summer. Uh...unless you count $4 a gallon gas! Surprised

You've got mad skills, by the way. I wouldn't be upset at your showing in this tournament at all. I'd kill for a fraction of your talent. Well, maybe not kill - I'd just seriously wound for a fraction of your talent. Laughing
