  1. Dynafire What is the deal with Square-Enix?

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 21 2008

There are a few things in the world that don't make sense. Braille on a parking meter, chocolate chip pancakes and sausage on a stick, the Bush administration, and the fact that even though it has been almost 12 years, we don't have a remake of Final Fantasy VII.

Why? Seriously. WHY? Is Square-Enix seriously so stupid that they would avoid remaking a game that would obviously sell millions of copies and thousands of PS3 consoles, were it to be a PS3 exclusive? You know, I'm no financial genius or anything, but I tend to think that making money is good. Instead of dedicating resources to a true remake, we ended up with Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus. DoC was an okay game, and I've heard CC was decent as well, but why beat around the bush? Why put off what would help Sony establish a firm foothold in the console wars? Why not make a ZILLION DOLLARS in the process?

Think of every non-PS2 Final Fantasy that Square-Enix has remade. Seriously. I want you to think of every single Final Fantasy game Square-Enix has re-released on a new platform. You know what? I'll save you time. Every single one, except for FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, and FF Mystic Quest (because it was pretty awful). It doesn't make sense. Even Final Fantasy Tactics saw a remake on the PSP, so why is it that Final Fantasy VII, the most well-received and one of the best games in the series has not seen a re-release?

I'd like to think that it's because they are secretly working on a remake in absolute secrecy, in a place very similar to Rapture from Bioshock. Developers are constantly slaving away in 16-hour shifts to create the most epic remake in history, only to drop it on an unexpecting public on some obscure weekend, just to watch peoples' heads explode upon seeing it on store shelves. This is obviously not true, by the way.

However, there is hope. Chrono Trigger is finally seeing a re-release on the DS. (It had already been re-released on the PS1, but that was ages ago.) This is loooooooooooooooooong overdue. I hope this game sells millions of copies the first week, and S-E finally pulls their heads out from their you-know-whats and realizes "hey, these people seem to like good games. Maybe we should re-release our other good games that people have been clamoring about over a decade."

Yeah, this was more like a rant than a story, but my point is that there should be a FFVII remake, and there is no good reason for not having one.
