Following up on FFVII, I present Final Fantasy Tactics.

Since I really liked Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy Tactics was the only other FF game out on the Playstation at the time, I bought it, expecting it to be similar to FFVII, only to be extremely disappointed. At first.

This game is a Strategy RPG, where you fight by assigning units to battle, then moving them around on a grid-based system (Think chess, but cooler). After you complete your move, you can then attack, use abilities, heal, etc. So yeah, this was my first introduction to the SRPG genre, and it was a good place to start. Of all the SRPGs I've played to date, I'm pretty sure this one is the hardest, and actually does require strategy to win battles. Leveling up is surprisingly not the key to becoming stronger in this game. Enter the job system.

The job system is what makes this game so memorable to me. Instead of a single character getting strong enough to beat everything solo, you are pretty much forced to utilize a small army to its full potential. You have only a handful of jobs to choose at first, such as the chemist, black mage, and white mage, but eventually gain access to stuff like ninjas, time mages, and geomancers. By taking on a chosen class, a character will be able to learn class-specific abilities through accumulating JP. You get both EXP and JP from performing actions in battle. You only gain JP that can be used on your current job. If you want to learn black magic, you have to be a black mage to do so. However, it is possible to give a character the abilities of another job class, so you can customize your characters to an extent. It's a little too deep for me to tell you about, but just check it out and you'll see what I mean.

The story is impossible to follow, and I am not exaggerating in the least. I'm sure you could gain an understanding of it if you played through the game a few times, but it is very hard to follow. There are quite a few memorable moments though, most of which involve backstabbing, religion and murder - it is by far the darkest storyline of any Final Fantasy I've played (Everything up to XII). Still, it is a fantastic game with truly strategic combat, and a great soundtrack as well.

Cannot tell whether you like it or not, but I love FF Tactics. I grew up playing that. Smile Instead of playing a shootin game i loved stratagy and the costomization of your characters (picking what class they are and setting up the abilities they use). Spectral Force 3 is kinda close to it, but I would like to find a game similar to FFT.
