Player Chronicle -- Posted on Sep 10 2009

After my recent viewings of the new Friday the 13th and The Unborn, I've decided that the horror movie genre isn't going to go into any new directions any time soon. I've been watching horror and slasher movies for a very long time, even going way back to the movies that were horror in the 60's and 70's.

Things haven't changed. There's a couple of things I want to touch on about horror movies that make me roll my eyes every time I see one.

Group of friends. There's always a group of young adults traveling, visiting, adventuring, doing something that they normally don't do in order to start the ridiculous plot. Something happens, blown tire, somebody gets sick, a cow falls on the car, whatever, and they're stranded. Or heck, maybe they even reach the destination.

Series of events. They usually happen to the friends one at a time, picking them off as they either wander off by themselves or are given a task to do that sends them into the night with but a mere lantern and pocket knife. That person is dead, and we all know it.

Unstoppable force. For some reason, the bad guy, or guys, are unstoppable, cannot be killed, cannot be out smarted, cannot be plotted against, and any amount of police force is not enough.

Omnipresent bad guys. No matter where they run, how fast, in what direction, or where they hide, the friends are never safe from the bad guy because he knows where they are ALL THE TIME. I would think it would be pretty easy to loose somebody while running through the woods, heck, you can go in any direction. But the bad guy knows, and he probably opened up some kind of space/time rift in order to be at the cabin they were running towards before they got there. Oh yeah, he's already there.

Electric bill. The bad guy has some kind of fortress of solitude where he keeps the bodies, weapons, torture devices, whatever. Usually lit by very poor lighting. Wait a minute, lit? Electricity? Who's paying the bill? Runs on generators? Who's buying the gas? Is the super deformed monster going to the gas station to buy gas? Nitpicking, I know. But they want me to believe this is reality, and I don't buy it.

Nudity. Uh... hmm... never hurts, I suppose.

The other form of horror movies is supernatural movies where there's some kind of demonic force or haunting spirit, or whatever. These movies rely on disturbing images and the "jump factor" to give you that scare. Ill lit places and dark corners rule in these movies. But the movie ends the same way where the hero has to do something ridiculous to rid the spirit of this world, winning the battle.

What I want to see is a horror movie where the bad guy is either ultra realistic, or a supernatural demon that actually rules the world and wins. That would be cool.

Disclaimer: I did very poorly in English class, and I also feel I didn't spend enough time to construct my thoughts completely. In other words, this may read like crap. Smile But hopefully I entertained you for a few minutes.

I complete agree, horror movies have just kind of stalled off the path of being what they once were - scary.

They either rely too much on shock scenes or gore. Like Hostile was pretty much about shocking gore and honestly, after the first 30 minutes into the bloody bath your desensitize to it.

You mean an honest to good god bad guy with a right actor and proper script lines.. Like Hannibal lector ;D ss-ss-ss. And that was add-lip for his most quoted line.

You and I share a similar mindset! In fact, right before I went to bed this morning I watched Halloween (Rob Zombie's version) and posted that it puts all the other Halloween movies to shame...I have many reasons why, too many to list here so thank you for inspiring me to write another chronny!

Aw c'mon. you're no fun. A lot of that is horror tradition. lol but some of it does kind of make sense.

Its always got to be a group of young ppl because those are the target audience. Thats whose mostly gonna be wacthing the movie. Anyone older or younger is gonna be at home anyway, nice and safe.
But if a single person ran into a psycho that was easy to kill, never knew where you were, and didn't have electricity, well, that wouldn't work.

And they have to die one at a time to build tension and suspense.

Love the chronicle! Love it! Very Happy

Fun-to-read Chronicle here and for many of these reasons...I don't waste my time with horror movies, haha, although the SAW series is something I enjoy each Halloween I suppose Wink
