Player Chronicle -- Posted on Sep 05 2007
Borderlands is an up-and-coming title from the fellows over at Gearbox that has the potential, in my opinion, to turn the gaming world on it's side. Touted (possibly pre-maturely) as the very first true FPSRPG (first-person shooter role-playing game), it combines hack-n-slash grinder elements from games such as Diablo and World of Warcraft with the FPS-intensity of games like Halo and Quake. This comes together nicely for what is sure to be a block-buster title.
At the core of the Borderlands experience is a unique weapon-generation system capable of creating over 500,000 different guns. This system utilizes AI to ensure that guns "make sense" so that you're not doing things such as using .45 rounds in a shotgun, or things that would break the physic's engine. However, the developers are trying to make this system ss limitless as possible. Therefore, the player could very well find a gun that severely effects the difficulty of the game. (Think unlimited pistol of instant vaporization, etc) However, that developers of the game aren't concerned. In fact, the suggest that one the player's main goals is to aquire a weapon such as this. Besides, the odd's of picking up the insta-gib shotgun of world smiting would still be something like 1 in 500,000. So... good luck!
On top of the intricate weapon generation system, those wacky Gearbox guys are also working on a similar system for armor and item generation! What a bunch of nuts! When the game is finally finished it will boast more weapons than ALL other FPS shooter's combined, as well as more items than all of the Diablo series.
At this point, news of Borderlands is fairly sparse, but I will try to keep this Chronicle updated from time-to-time as more information is available.
Expect a third-quarter, 2008 release for PS3, Xbox360 and PC.

Posted On Feb 12 2008This does sound like an interesting game. Using firearms, I'm sure they could come up with several hundred thousand "random" types of weapons. 50 different barrels, 50 different grips, 50 different ammo types, and 50 different weapon types would be 625,000. 50 is a bit of an exaggeration, but without knowing more of the mechanics of the game it'd be hard to suggest more. Maybe 30+ versions of stat altering effects, another 30+ version of passive abilities (damage resist, health regen, etc). I'm sure they will be more creative than I'm being though.
As for playing it on PS3... yes, we'll see. :P -

Posted On Sep 06 2007Great PREVIEW! Your chronicles are looking great, so keep it up Borderlands sounds like a very interesting concept that I want to hear more about. I don't understand how they'll have that many weapons, but keep us updated as I'm sure this game will be fun to play.
I hope to have a PS3 by then...I bet that will be the best system to play it on...we'll see
