State of Superhero Games
Player Chronicle -- Posted on May 16 2010
I don't understand it, I really don't. Batman: Arkham Asylum comes out and redefines the super hero game. Not only is it the best super hero game on the market, it's also one of the best overall games I've played this generation. Surely it would pave the way for a new breed of hero game. Surely other developers would take notice and follow accordingly. Then....Iron Man 2 releases. Sigh.
I do believe things are improving, and they should! After all, the majority of hardcore gamers I know are also hardcore hero fans. I've got a Superman poster sitting right next to my Sephiroth poster (you know, in case Sephiroth decides to act up.) Marvel's acquisition by Disney is going to produce some better results in the long run, at least after the existing contracts with developers run out. We're seeing a Transformers game being released independently of a movie that might actually not suck.
I'm hoping the sales of titles such as Arkham Asylum will motivate the publishers to re-evaluate their strategies. I can't so much blame the developers, I can't imagine any self-respecting nerd feels good by releasing a shoddy hero game. They suffer from the strict schedules, story requirements, and limited resources imposed by their publishers.
We're overdo for hero's to receive the same treatment as characters like Marcus Fenix or Master Chief. I mean, come on, Superman's last battle is against a tornado? Fail.

Posted On May 17 2010I agree and have always hated how video games based on movies suck so bad. I feel like it's just a financial supplement to a movie's bottom line, versus a chance to build upon the movie and take the story to places that actors/humans can not, ya know!
Nice Chronicle here, thanks! -
