  1. A-Thon X It Oughta be a Game: Thriller

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 07 2009

It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
    You're paralyzed

'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about strike
You know it's thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight

C'mon now, you know you love that song. You don't have to be honest with me, but please, be honest with yourself. Now you probrably read the title to this chronicle and asked yourself " Thriller? A videogame?! Surely not!" But lets just consider this a moment...

"Thriller" is a 1984 hit single recorded by Michael Jackson for the Epic label. In the U.S., it reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number one on the Radio & Records singles charts,[1] while in the UK, it peaked at number ten. On February 20, 2006, the single, as well as the video, was re-released as part of the Visionary: The Video Singles package. The 14-minute video is regarded by MTV[2] as the greatest music video of all-time, and the song itself is considered to be one of Jackson's signature songs. The single was released slightly earlier in the United Kingdom, in November 1983.

The song remains popular as evidenced by sales of over 1,159,000 digital downloads in the U.S. alone[3] and regularly returns to the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart,[4] since the chart's inception in 2005.

"Thriller" was covered in a episode of the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show" but was later removed after the show was canceled due to copyright issues. It also appears in the Sega Master System/Game Gear and Megadrive/Genesis adaptions of Moonwalker Michael Jackson's Moonwalker as a dance attack song in earlier versions of the game while it is removed from later versions and replaced with "Another Part of Me" and "Billie Jean" due to copyright issues.

From 1984 to 1986, the instrumental version was used as the theme for Championship Wrestling , featuring footage of Hulk Hogan winning the WWF Championship from The Iron Sheik in 1984. Coincidentally, Thriller was released as a single in the United States on January 23 of that year, the day of the championship match." Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thriller_(song)

So the songs pretty popular, and if popular books and movies can be games why not songs? And i'm not talking about Guitar Hero/Rockband.

    Graphics
I was thinking the DDR engine but i havent really seen an update of this in awhile. But having played RE: The Umbrella Chronicles and looking forward to The Darkside Chronicles, i think this engine is the way to go.

    Gameplay
I see this a using the same perspective as a lightgun game. Anyone ever play Typing of the Dead? (Hey, i liked it.) It would be kinda like that. The paths would be predetermined, but you would have choices to which path to take, just like in the Resident Evil lightgun games.

    Combat
Okay, this ones tricky. How would the combat go in a Thriller game? Well, just like in Typing of the Dead, or DDR, you would be given prompts on what your supposed to do, you do it correctly you deal damage to the Zombie or Werecat or whatever you're fighting at the time. You screw up, you take damage. Beyond that, i'm not really sure, i've never actually played DDR. :/ But that would be the basic gist of the game.

    Challenges
Just like most games there could be challenges and/or boss battles. Guitar hero had you guitar battling big bosses, so how about dance-offs against werecats and zombies? And Thriller wouldn't be the only song on here of course, there would be a whole soundtrack to the game to master.

    Storyline
This is the best part, cuz the story is already there. The video perfectly sets up the game. Of course it would have to be tweaked to provide more than 14 minutes of gameplay, but its zombies. C'mon that writes itself. Something about his girlfriend being dragged off and you must rescue her by dancing your way through the zombie hordes. LOLz, i love it!

Overall, this is Resident Evil meets DDR, with the best video of all time thrown in for good measure. I got just 5 words for you: Zombie Boss Battle Dance-offs! (is dance-off one word?)

With this community's love for zombies, the music genre of video games, and of course Michael Jackson...I see no reason this shouldn't be a game as well Laughing

I especially enjoyed your attention to detail on this Chronicle!
