Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 17 2009

Right now I'm in NY with my aunt, so I'm way too far away from my game hoard to do anything right now(unless I had uber z-ray vision and dimension bending skillz).

    (wait for it...)

    BUT. (there it is!)
I finally got my Aunt to buy that Wii she's been staring at for so long. And she looked to me to school her on gaming, what equipment is really worth it, etc. (we have another recruit methinks!)

So now she has some of the games that I had yet to play for myself, and I've taken the oppourtunity to get some 'work' done while I was here.

First on the list? The new Punch Out.

This is only a half of a complete review, mostly because I kept on getting my ass kicked, and I finally threw the towel in right around Don Flamenco.

When I first tried to play the NES Punch Out, I kept on getting whupped by Glass Joe. GLASS. EFFING. JOE. *insert extremely painful embarrassment* So at that point I put down the controller, grabbed a soda, and went to go draw something epic on the sidewalk.

I started playing the new Punch Out with the same expectations, but I'm incredibly surprised.

It's actually easier to figure out the opponent's ques. The advanced graphics allow a wider range of expressions and actions, and the fluid motions make it a more intense experiance.

Everyone might move far faster than they did in the original game, but I found it was getting easier to adapt to each opponent's unique Can O' Whupass (which for the first five or so matches, they used a whole damned barrel of it).

But that doesn't mean that the game itself was easy. Far from it actually. It all depends on how much you pay attention (although it helps if you've at least played the original).

I was blown away by the art direction. They managed to maintain the classic feel, and then polish it up for the new generation.

All of the characters were fleshed out with thier own personalities and quirks, so even fighting the familiar faces of yesterages was a refreshing experiance.

Nintendo really brought out thier 'wackyness' with this game, and players from the older days would recognize most of the in-jokes, and will appriciate thier unique brand of humor.

Voice acting is superb, and I was surprised and delighted that the fighters spoke thier native languages. (although I'm not too sure wheather or not King Hippo was REALLY speaking hippo. It could be either a fat chewbacca, or an elephant. And I know for a fact that the Bear Hugger was speaking redneck, not canadian.)

The music was amazing. I liked the way that it changed to suit each opponent, and it really defined the whole experiance.

    *que the epic crecendo*

Overall, this game brought out the amazing experiance of Punch Out!! that we could all imagine in our minds. It conveyed the very spirit of the game, the story that was spoken by those pixels and soundchips so long ago, made into a remarkable game that can be enjoyed by both veterans and newcomers.

Have you dabbed your eyes yet? I have. *sniffle*

On a random note, before I recognized the speech pattern as french, I thought Glass Joe was going 'Oh shit' after a combo.

On a really random note, food commercials are even more torturous in high definition.

When I finish the game, I'll be giving specific details.
