Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 16 2009

Let me start this off with I am a huge fan of the Tekken series I have been for as long as there has been Tekken, but I guess it is still awkward for me to play Tekken on xbox instead of on PS or in an arcade. So admittedly that could be some component of my problem.

First it seems that Tekken is an awful lot like the last Soul Caliber in terms of its visual effects. That's not terrible considering Soul Caliber was beautiful, but I would have expected something more to make the two games more distinct from each other. I remember some characterized Soul Caliber as "Tekken with weapons" that may be the only difference between the two in their current versions at least as far as the main fighting game is concerned.

There seems to be an implied emphasis on the Tekken Force aspect of the game. I didn't dislike this feature in previous incarnations of Tekken, I always thought it had previously been under developed, but I don't know like I said it just feels overly emphasized. Some of the Tekken force stuff I do like though, especially the increased story coverage. It has a lot of varying complexity so it makes it feel like you have two games within Tekken the traditional fighter and a very developed Tekken Force game.

The shadow identities are kind of weird. I actually had to google that to figure out what was happening for awhile I thought it was forcing me to connect and play over XBL. So some primer about that before it threw me into that would have been nice. Also it seems like the shadows can range from the very skilled (sometimes overly skilled) to the what seems analogous to random button pushes so I'm not sure if or how this is really any better than the traditional game AI.

I've noticed that in the last Soul Caliber and this Tekken in order to routinely defeat the main boss character requires an over reliance on blocking or an ability to exploit extremely lengthy combinations to prevent their attacks and cause damage. That seems like a disingenuous thing to force on people at least the blocking component particularly since I've always felt that at least with Tekken it was play and play as fast as possible. I always enjoyed once getting a basic handle on a version of Tekken getting to chisel down how long it takes to get through the game and what it takes to improve times. To forcibly prolong the final stage or to require talent that I think is pretty scarce even amongst hard core fighter gamers (especially when you think of having to have to repeatedly do this with all of the characters). It honestly seems like it cheapens the experience. I mean if this were an arcade and you used that strategy constantly against opponents it'd get old really quickly so why would that be okay or expected in play against the computer.

I know this sounds like a lot of complaints and well it is some honest criticisms. I say it with love, because Tekken has been around for a long time and I fully expect it to be here for a long time to come. So I truly hope some of these things are considered in the future. All and all though I did pre-order the game and I do not regret that at all I do enjoy Tekken 6 and I think even if you've never played Tekken before you can pick this game up and really enjoy it so I encourage anyone and everyone to try and who knows maybe we can go a few rounds over XBL sometime!

I'm not a fighter game fan, as it always seems like I'm mashing button, but I still enjoyed your thoughts on this game...thanks!
