  1. Gvirus05 SOUL CALIBUR IV

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 08 2008

Well Soul Calibur IV is finally here. It has been a very long wait for me. I really enjoy the Soul series. Soul Blade, Soul Edge, and then finally the Soul Calibur series. I did not care so much for Soul Calibur III, but has the series been revived?

Like every Soul Calibur game, there is a story mode. You play through each character's experience in the so called 'story'. Like in the previous games, the story mode is lacking. There pretty much is no story at all. The cutscenes are beautiful though. Each character's story only has 5 levels then you're done. Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Next, there is Arcade Mode. Arcade mode is simple, pick a character and fight through 8 levels. Pretty basic and it's fun. It proves to be more challenging than the lame story mode.

Now for my favorite solo mode, The Tower of Lost Souls. This is a mode where you can ascend or descend a tower. Each floor of the tower holds a fun and unique challenge. Essentially this is the mode to play to unlock your items for character creation.

Character Creation is actually really good in this game. You pretty much build a character from the ground up. Choosing the body shape, hair, face, skin color, etc etc. You do have to choose a fighting style from the roster of available characters, other than that, the character can be as unique as you can make it. Each piece of your equipment governs your attack, defense, and health. Also they control how many points you have to spend on special abilities. I was actually very impressed with this, especially for it being in a fighting game.

The fighting has never been better. The classic characters still have their iconic moves, as well as some new ones. The new characters are great editions. The impressive roster supports 30+ characters once they're all unlocked, plus you can create 50 additional characters.

Xbox live actually runs okay on this game. I have encountered a couple lag issues, but nothing major. It's alot of fun to play people online and show off your customized characters.

Many people were either excited or disappointed with addition of Star Wars characters. I have the xbox 360 version so I have Yoda and The Apprentice. I'll start with Yoda.... HE'S CHEAP!!! He's really short, so some of your attacks go right over his head. On top of that he can't be grabbed/thrown. You just can't do it, he's short. The Apprentice is better but not much. He is really over powered. Don't get me wrong, he's fun to play as, but he can float and shoot lightning....so yeah pretty strong.

Well I still have quite a bit to unlock on this game here, but I've played enough to give it a solid rating. If you're a fan of the series, yes you HAVE to get it. If you're new, try it out!

    Rating: 8.5/10

Yeah, I'm not much of a fighting game type of guy, but great video game review and I know a lot of people were looking forward to this for sure!

What's your favorite character and you should get a conversation spiced back up in the forum for this game...
