You're the splode beneath my splosion!
Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 11 2009
When it comes to XBLA titles, I've never been super impressed. I'm not talking about classics being re-released, im talking about brand new arcade titles. The last new xbla game I enjoyed was Castle Crashers... until now.
I went ahead and downloaded Splosion Man. Splosion Man is fun. The game is a platformer full of dry humor. You play as, well, Splosion Man, a scientific experiment gone wrong. SM is made of fire, and he explodes. Sploding is your main way to traverse a level. You splode to jump, jump off walls, launch explosive barrels, hit switches, kill enemies and help your partner if you're in multiplayer. The level designs are quite enjoyable, but sometimes really frustrating. The game gets devilishly challenging towards the end.
This is the first recent platformer that has made me think, and die, many many times. One negative side to the levels, is that the scenery is kind of bland.
The goal of the game is to escape the lab and kill the scientists. When you kill a scientist, they splode into a bunch of nicely packaged deli meats. (see the type of dry humor here). There are nearly 50 levels to complete, and both single player and multiplayer campaigns. One interesting thing is that the single player and multiplayer level designs are different.
Splosion man supports up to 4 players local or online. In multiplayer, levels are designed specifically around team work. There are very few times where a single player can complete the level if his/her partner is dead. You will find yourselves helping your teammate progress through a trap, splode off one another, or watch as one of you commits suicide to get cake.
Splosion man also offers rewards that games should, such as ; two gamer pics, a premium theme, and avatar accessories. These awards are all included in the game, no extra cost. You just have to meet requirements to unlock them.
I really enjoyed Splosion Man. I'm a sucker for platformers and this game did not disappoint.
Gameplay: 9/10 -fun yet challenging, many levels and modes to play through
