  1. CpE_Wahoo June 2010 - Super Smash Bros Brawl @ Hi Score Gaming

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 19 2010

On June 18th, 2010, my brother along with the guys from Southeast Smash (http://southeastsmash.weebly.com) got together with Hi Score Gaming on Battlefield Blvd. in Chesapeake, VA to put on a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. The tournament was kind of a last minute thing, with only really one week of notice in advance. Regardless, some of the bigger names in the southeast Virginia area came out to play in this tournament.

I helped to run the tournament for my brother, but elected to also play last minute just for fun. I'm not really huge into the competitive smash scene, but I can hold my own and not get completely embarrassed. With 22 entrants, I was one of the unlucky few that didn't get the first round bye and had to play a Marth player nicknamed Caker, while I main Pikachu. The first match was a close one, with him winning on his last stock at about 80% on Final Destination. I kept it close, so I figured I would stick to Pikachu and try to out-play him. I counter-picked Yoshi's Island, but he had me figured out and 2 stocked me.

Immediately knocked into Loser's, I had a little wait for the next match. I ended up playing a Lucas player nicknamed Sac. He had a pretty good Lucas, but he clearly didn't know a lot of match ups. I started with Pikachu and beat him on my last stock at about 90%. The second match was even closer, with him taking it at about 120%. The third match, I counterpicked R.O.B. and beat him with about 40% of my last stock. Again, he didn't know many match-ups it seemed, as he didn't realize R.O.B. had the gyro (I charged up and he just ate it), and later when we were just playing casuals he didn't know Mr. G&W had the bucket move. If Sac puts some time into the game and learned some match-ups, he would be a very solid player.

Almost immediately after that match, I was called up again to play against COCM, a Falco player. I wasn't thinking right, and I felt good about my R.O.B. after the last match so I picked him. I got my ass handed to me, getting 2 stocked. Next match, I went with Pikachu and played much better, but not enough. I was able to chain-grab him up to about 70%, and take the first stock. After that, however, his tournament experience and just overall skill took over and he again two stocked me.

Overall, I was really happy with my play. It was only my 4th Brawl tournament, and my second with players that are actually really good (the other two were at UVA for charity). I should've chose Pikachu for both matches against COCM, and spammed that chain grab as much as I could, but lesson learned and we'll move on.

The rest of the tournament had the names we expected at the top to be there. COCM was unfortunate to draw Slash in the loser's bracket immediately after his match with me, and so Slash knocked him out. Ghad made a nice run into the loser's semi-finals, but got knocked out by DubAllDee's Meta Knight outside of the money placings. DubAllDee ran into OMGH4X in the Winner's Semis to get knocked into Loser's. In a battle for 3rd, DubAllDee took out PNPC, who used multiple characters including Mr. Game & Watch and Ice Climbers. PNPC settled for 3rd place, getting his money back plus a dollar. In Grand Finals, we had a rematch of DubAllDee's Meta Knight with OMGH4X's King DeDeDe. OMGH4X proved he was a step above everyone, sweeping the Grand Finals, even with DubAllDee's counter pick stage of Rainbow Cruise twice. DubAllDee left the venue with $22, while OMGH4X won $77.

Overall, the tournament was a huge success and tons of fun. The players seemed to really enjoy it too, and loved the venue. We'll be looking to run another tournament in July, hopefully ironing out the details now so that this next tournament will have time to be advertised and huge. We're looking to run all three Smash games in Brawl, Melee, and vanilla. Keep a look out for more details!
