  1. spartana15 Spec Ops: The Line E3 Preview

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 20 2010

For those of you that have played previous entries in the Spec Ops franchise, this is a reboot of the franchise, and 2K would appreciate if you just simply forgot those other titles. For the rest of you that have NOT played a Spec Ops title, well, keep reading.

Spec Ops: The Line is a reimagining of the franchise. Published by 2K and developed by German-based Yager, The Line is a third person, squad based shooter set in Dubai. Terrible sandstorms have destroyed most of the city and thrust it into a state of anarchy. The sand functions as a gameplay mechanic as well as a backdrop, but we'll get to that later. The gameplay appears very Gears of War-ish, so if you're familiar with any third person shooter from the past five years, you'll be fine. Unfortunately, that's also part of the problem.

Spec Ops doesn't seem to do anything out of the ordinary. The graphics are standard, nothing great but nothing bad. The audio was pretty standard, also, although there was a nifty "echo" effect in the tunnels (possibly assisted by the insane sound system 2K had set up in the room.) Gunplay looked perfectly playable, but I failed to see anything that really sets the title apart. There was an instance where the player threw a grenade at a barricade, causing it to explode and filling the area with sand, but it looked pretty scripted and not something I expect to be possible whenever the player wishes.

2K is promising a heavy emphasis on player choice throughout the single player campaign. We didn't get any multiplayer details aside from "It's there," but the game is due for release in 2011, giving plenty of time for details to be released. Overall, I came away from the presentation with a solid "meh" feeling, but hopefully they can change my mind before the title releases.
