  1. spartana15 Initial E3 Impressions

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 16 2010

This is my first year attending the Electronic Entertainment Exposition, or E3 for short. As an avid gamer, this is the pinnacle of gaming conventions and something I've dreamed of attending for years. Aside from my emergency room debacle in Los Angeles, my trip has been absolutely phenomenal, and that was even prior to the beginning of the conference. Unfortunately, the big press conferences are invitation only, so I was unable to attend any of the major shows put on by Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony. However, I did catch Microsoft's on television Monday, and it just increased my level of excitement for the rest of the show. I'm going to in detail in other articles about individual games, but I'd like to take this chance to describe the atmosphere and experience of this glorious convention.
The entire Los Angeles Convention Center is plastered in gaming posters, from the hundred foot Assassin's Creed Brotherhood scroll to the giant image of Kevin Butler using the PlayStation Move, the entire area has been transformed into a gaming haven. Even with the NBA Finals happening across the street at the Staples Center, the gaming sights and sounds dominate the scene. Upon entering the convention center, we were welcomed with booming bass, thousands of attendees, and a very stout security force. I cannot stress how locked-down this place is. Everybody needs identification badges, no questions asked. There is a cabinet with about 12 different gaming publications available to us, free of charge, so of course I loaded them up in one of the free Battlestar Galactica bags I picked up on the way. Rest assured I'll read them later. All of them.
Our first stop was the media hospitality room. This is where all the media gathers to meet and greet, charge the computers and other gadgets, and stuff our faces with the free food. It's a very busy place, filled with conversation and expensive technology. It was pretty neat to be in the same room with the guys and gals from G4, Spike TV, IGN, and all those other fun sources of information. Zach (Ellsbury) and I wandered around a bit before the show started to get a feel for the layout, and it seems there is no wasted space. Things that can be advertised on, are. Any wall space is covered, floor space is occupied, and everybody's got some sort of sponsored shirt on. Then, the doors opened to the show. Thousands of people in line, roaring with applause, burst out onto the show floor.
Games everywhere. Bass thumping the entire building. Bright lights, beautiful girls, not-so-beautiful guys, and overly enthusiastic gamers clawing to get their hands on the hottest new titles. I'm going to be writing individual articles for each game I experienced, either through hands on play or an eyes on demonstration, so stay tuned to see if your favorite game made my list.
