My Contra Love/Hate Relationship

I was playing Contra 4 last night when I got home. Now Contra 4 is an awesome game. What's not to love about a sidescrolling, old school, run 'n' gun action game?
I won't get into detail with a review. I'll state a simple, "That game is cool."
Now the Contra series, to me, is weird. The NES's Contra & Super C were great games. Let's not forget the immortal KONAMI CODE! I digress, Contra III: The Alien Wars was the best in the series at that point....and then it all seemed to fall apart when the jump to Playstation happened.
(I'll mention Hard Corps, Operation C, Contra Force ETC. just to satisfy anyone who's ready to jump at any possibility of inconsistency)
So Contra Legacy of War, The Contra Adventure, Shattered Soldier, and Neo Contra(my opinion) TERRIBLE GAMES! While I admit, the concept was admirable, Contra in 3D. Let's face, at THAT time 3D was in. Super Mario 64 did it and it was great, but 3 dimensional glory isn't meant for everyone. (Castlevania 64 anyone?)
2D (Contra + Nintendo) = Good (so far)
3D (Contra + Playstation) = Bad (so far, I'm trying to be fair)
COINCIDENCE...maybe
