  1. gameclucks GCGuy ToTO - Why I Run Tournaments

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 04 2010

I run events for two main reasons…

    First
I own a company that at some level depends on it. I make money on tournaments. My bills depend on tournaments and events. My company is GamersHaven LLC dba GameClucks/TourneyPlay. I have fixed (rent, phone, internet, electricity.. costs that I pay every month no matter what) and variable (payroll, candy, drinks..expenses that are sales related) expenses. Those require income to pay.
    Sounds basic?
You are right now saying “No Duh!”… but you would be amazed how many people think nothing of these… (I am asked daily to discount things, give someone a pop for free…whatever… those things represent me not paying my bills. When you go to 7-11 do you ask them to cut you a deal? NO, so why ask me??).

    Second
I enjoy it. I like running events. This should be no secret. I did not go to ActiveGamers last Sept or whatever for any reason other then to promote TP3 at the time and I ended up helping work the brackets… they did not ask me… Rej did not need help, he is very capable… I just am around a bracket and all of a sudden I am calling matches… When I go to GO in Oregon, I don’t intend to do much other then “be GC Guy”… and I end up running brackets… CLU7CH and the crew do not need help… I just push them out of the way at their own event and do it.

I am pretty competitive by nature… but I was never really into sports, quit baseball and soccer before 8th grade. There were not video game tournaments when I was a kid… heck prob not even until I was 18++ (hmm dating myself….so lets clear that upright now… GC Guy is 40. Yes…Forty as in Four Zero. Is that weird? Maybe a little I guess… )
    But I have played games since I was 10ish… In 2009 I was on a CEVO CoD4 Team for 5v5 S&D. We were in CEVO-O as GameClucks, we went 4 & 4 I think…
So while I did not display my competitive nature in sports, I have played D&D since I was 8 or so (prob earlier actually…)… I have always excelled in the “job world”, did decent in school when I decided too… I have two college degrees (Pol Sci and Soc). I have owned a couple of businesses, still have two of them.
I do not think you can be a business owner and not be competitive, because it gets no more in your face competitive then owning a business in which your entire life savings is dependant on (or usually is in the first few years anyway… I am past the first few years now, but still more invested then not in my companies financially).

I also am a people person. I like people. Sure at times when you hear me on live stream or hear me talk to Eggz or Nerd or some of the other GC regulars… it prob sounds like I am an a-hole… or hate people. You may hear me at the end of a long event “*****ing” about the time or something… Its an act (mostly hah). I pretend to be a grumpy old man, because guess what? I am twice most of your ages. I am in many ways probably more like your parents then I am like you. I care about what many of you do. I hope that I am a positive influence on all of you. Yeah I swear a lot at times hah.. I should work on that. But I am 100% anti drug. On a regular basis I joke with some of you in a funny, but really not joking way, asking you to stop doing whatever you are doing drug and alcohol wise… While I have never done drugs, I can almost guarantee I have drank many many many times over what you have and possibly what you ever will. I was lucky… I decided to stop (slow down by 99% is maybe a better description) before it was an issue. I know what it does though.
While the details of your life, honestly, do not matter to me, your continued existence does matter. Not just because you represent dollar signs to my company, but because I like people. People doing the right thing, living, contributing to society, etc, matters to me.

So I own a company that runs events and I enjoy running them and I am a people person… That is the basics of why I do it.

So while this blog is not really “how to run an event” I think it gives you some insight as to WHY and that is important. If there is no WHY, you have no reason to do it…
