  1. gameclucks The GC Guy Theory of Tournament Organization - Intro

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 04 2010

So writing this is a risk… but I believe there are so many misconceptions about how events are planned, set up, organized and executed that I have decided someone has to do this… so why not GC Guy?

Why would this be a risk?
I say that because, in this series of blogs, I will let you in on virtually every aspect of how I go about every thing event related from setting a date to writing my shoutouts after its over. In those steps, there are likely some things that some of you may decide you do not like about the How and Why, like the fact that my goal is to make a LOT of money doing this.
So it’s a risk because if I turn enough of you off… I not only do not make any money, but I go out of business and lose my investment.

    Why me?
I think the answer to that is simple, and the GC crowd hears it all the time…
    Because I am GC Guy!
But seriously… I am one of the few on this site that is an actual company, so the process I go through is very different then most of you. The fact that I am a company changes EVERYTHING about how I do this. You may not see it, but its very different. I have legal issues, money issues, sales issues… all of these factor
into how I put an event together.
I am also considered (lol at least I hope this is what I am considered) one of the top TOs on the West Coast…maybe top 3 or 4? (Risk #1 is in saying this hah)… maybe top 10 in the US? No matter what # I am considered, I think we all know I run solid events… so I know what I am talking about (possible Risk #2 is that I don’t know what I am talking about and this series of blogs shows you that LOL)

I want to help cover everything from setting a date to writing your shoutouts…This not meant to be a step by step how to do an event, but things I think about, things I do, reasons I think what I think, things I have to consider…

There are other places you can find out the step by step of how to set up the event… this info is to explain what I do, how I do it, why I do it in some stages of the event…

Things I will attempt to shed light on (in no certain order):

    Business Issues
*Profit and Why Making Money Is Ok
    *How Much Profit Is Ok?
*Legality of Running Events – Business Licensing, Permits, Taxes, etc
*Good Events vs Bad Events and How To Handle Them

    Planning The Event
    *Setting The Date
    *Venue
    *Advertising
    *Setting Entry Fee’s and Prizes
    *Sponsors
*Why Some People Get In Free
    *Rule Sets
*How Many Games Is Too Many?

    Running The Event
*Brackets and How To Run Them
    *Letting Players Run Your Brackets
    *Playing In Your Own Events
    *Paid Help vs Free Help
    *Live Stream
    *Dealing With Players

    Wrapping Up
    *Shoutouts

The above is not a complete list… some things maybe covered a few times as many of them are related and the “topics” are not meant to represent a whole blog… so this could be 5 blogs, could be 10, could be 100… I will write what I need too to explain what I want to explain.

Have something you want me to write about? Something you wonder why I did what I did? Post it here and I will try and answer it in a blog about it…

I am not going to set myself a schedule on this… because I will not stick to it, since I have dozens of things more important then this to do… but I will try and do one a week or so… just not going to commit to anything…

Note: The blogs will be titled 'GCGuy ToTO - ' for future blogs on this.
