  1. E3 2009 Halo 3: ODST

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 18 2009

I know, I know...this game is already approaching release (September 22, 2009), but here's some last minute insight that we should have shared months ago, haha...

Ok, so Halo 3: ODST was literally my last appointment of E3 2009, and it was neat to save a game I was most excited about for last...not to mention be in the semi-exclusive Xbox 360 area. Obviously our Halo-heavy community wants to know about this follow-up, so I did my best to take a ton of notes during our closed presentation of Halo 3: ODST.
    ______________

    Introduction
The presentation started with two Bungie developers opening up the presentation and our first glimpse of the game was a beautiful cinematic called "The Rookie". We also enjoyed the "Dutch cinematic, but it was a great way to share the design quality of this upcoming title within the Halo Universe.

Don't quote me on this, but my notes say something about being a 2-disc release, which if I recall, means that if you don't already have Halo 3, you will if you buy the ODST release.

Anyways, back to the action. So after "The Rookie" cinematic, the Bungie developers took us on a tour of the new gameplay. Throughout the entire presentation, they both kept mentioning the fact that although it was originally meant to be more of an add-on, ODST quickly has become a unique game in and of itself.

    Gameplay
The gameplay is a lot different than what we've seen in Halo 2 and 3. It's actually been compared more to Halo 1, because of it's slower paced, more discovery-oriented approach. Your character is not Master Chief, but instead a Rookie Trooper who only has one gun, no overshield, and uses new guns like silenced rifles/pistols to do the dirty work.

The player's screen has a night vision and enemy locating visor which is cool, but I thought it may become annoying until you got used to things. It was also interesting to hear that Halo 3: ODST will have the largest map environments in Halo history, which was impressive.

    Firefight Mode
With the success of Call of Duty:World at War's Nazi Zombies and Gears of War's Hoard Mode, it came as no surprise that one of the major selling points of Halo 3: ODST was a new mode called "Firefight".

In Firefight, you and your friends (4 players max) can fend off an increasing amount of Covenant enemies, as you'll have 7 lives to go as deep into the never-ending struggle as you can. There will be 5 waves of enemies per round, so the action will be thick and require a lot of teamwork to go the distance.

This mode was especially interesting for me and I think it'll do very well among the Halo community. The line for actually playing this mode in a demo was always too long to wait for, so I had to pass on it at the event.

    Conclusion
Halo 3: ODST will surprise people. Maybe not as much as Halo Wars did, but some will love the mysterious, research-oriented, and exploration-heavy gameplay...while others will return to Halo 3 for the action-packed multiplayer battles...upset they payed $60 for new maps to play online with, haha.

Eventually the extra multiplayer maps that will be available with the ODST release will be available as stand alone DLC (no date given), but with more of a game than even Bungie had planned to develop...I see Halo 3: ODST doing some pretty big things, while continuing to feed the hungry mouths of the Halo playing community.

I was able to grab a few photos from this presentation, so you'll of course find them in this E3 2009's photo gallery Wink
