  1. E3 2009 Sony

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 11 2009

So you’re aware, these first-person accounts of E3 do not cover the entire spectrum of game titles that major developers such as Sony unveiled at E3 2009, but here are the games I had a close encounter with…

    MAG
So everyone is talking about MAG, right? This game that proudly offers a 256-player, online experience, was something that our community (and myself) has shown interest in. I went to go check it out and enjoyed a few interesting conversations with Steve (Lead Art Director) and Ed (Lead Technical Producer). They were sharing how they got this many people in one game to work, which was fun to hear about for sure. They explained a column-type of mapping that allows for fair spawning and their endless goal of keeping the frame rate at 30 fps no matter what.

Unfortunately, their network was down while I was there, so I could experience the game for myself on this day. Instead, I enjoyed the discussion about MAG and then checked out the other Sony titles they were highlighting in this private room off of the show floor.

    Heavy Rain
After a brief look at MAG, I spoke with a developer about Heavy Rain, which is a story of an FBI agent that is due to be released in 2010. This nice looking game had some unique ways of displaying what buttons where needed in a cool fight scene. The way they’re presenting this game feels pretty movie-like, but unfortunately the storyline has been done way too many times, ya know? I don’t remember what the team said about the multiplayer for this game, but I think I remember that there were no plans of this.

    God of War 3
After the MAG and Heavy Rain discussion, I jumped down to the God of War demo area. The Show Floor was highlighting this game as well, but this was much less stressful here, so I enjoyed some awesome gameplay. Although I haven’t played either of the first two, I hear the overall consciences is that this is like God of War 2, but better Very Happy

    Pixel Junk
This retro-flavored arcade game was not something I had seen before, but when I sat down with the Assistant Producer of the game, Gavin Russell, I soon found myself enjoying this fast, fun, and addictive little PSN game. Gavin said this was 1 of 4 for the series, so if you like this, you’ll have more to enjoy soon as well!

Anyways, I had to keep moving, so I left the private Sony room for the day, but later in the evening, Sumeet and I had the chance to enjoy a steak dinner with the Middle Eastern Rep from Sony and three freelance writers from Dubai and South Africa. Obviously we had a nice time, so the next day I had to stop back with Zach to check out MAG again.

    ______________NEXT DAY________________

So Zach and I arrived to meet Zena at this private Sony room the next day and this time we were able to sit down with MAG. I still had a hangover from the night before, but this was another great chance to see what Sony had to offer this year.

I feel like I was emitting a Microsoft-Loving Pulse, because we came into the Sony room, and once again, their network was down! Ouch.

    MAG (again)
Anyways, here’s the thing about MAG, don’t buy it. I know the advertised amount of players the game can handle is BA, but the gameplay was not good. If you’re an FPS fan, this game will let you down I think.

I’m not saying this is sweet technology that could take gaming to the next level, but this game is pretty rough around the edges for me and I can’t imagine they’ll get through this release without a lag issue arising.

    Fat Princess
If you remember, I had dropped a GoG Forum conversation about Fat Pricess, so when I met the Lead Developer for that game, I had to play that as well. As odd as the title is, I think this would be a great game for friends to play together! It gave me a strong Castle Crashers/Kingdom For Keflings vibe and I know how much our community enjoys those games. If you have a PS3, pick this up Very Happy

The show room floor had many other things such as the PSP Go, Uncharted 2, Grand Tourismo for the PSP, Hustle Kings, Trash Panic, LittleBigPlanet for the PSP, and many more of course. Obviously Sony has a lot coming in the coming months, but besides a few cool things, they remain pretty luck warm for me.

Overall, this private Sony room was fun, but mostly for the conversations. Of course they had the full show room presentation, but as you’ve read and heard on the GoGcast, I enjoy the more personal conversation with the developing staff and this room gave our team just that from the Sony camp.
