Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 16 2008

We stopped into the Atari private room at E3 and I had my notes out as we were toured around some of the newest projects from this classic video game company...

    The Witcher
This is a very clean RPG game that is being enhanced for the PC. The executive producer from Europe was at the Atari private room, to share how this game was being upgraded and released as an “enhanced” or “collector’s” edition.

I was not familiar with the game before today, but this European and medieval-set single player game looks like a lot of fun if you’re an RPG fan. It’s based off of a famous book, which I was not familiar with, but the video game uses the Aurora game engine and after 4 years of development, really looks nice.

It’s slated to be released later this year and with 3 completely different endings, this game is sure to give you a different experience each time you play the game.

    Backyard Football 09
This fully-licensed sports game looked like a lot of fun for the kids, but also a game the whole family could enjoy as well. As we spoke to the Executive Producer of the game, Skip George, he showed us the different game types and we played a short demo.

This game is set to release in the Fall of 2008 and has a real NFL player on each team. One of the cool ideas that we heard about, was the element that gave certain players “good days”, based on whether it was the character’s birthday and/or how certain combinations of teammates (like a brother and sister) could affect an individual’s play. The graphics were somewhat lacking, but to be honest, all the Atari games but “The Witcher” was kind of a let down.

Backyard Football 09 releases on the PS2, Wii, PC, and DS this Fall. If you have a family and like football, this may be a fun little game to try out.

    Deer Hunter Tournament
This was another game we were able to sit down with one of the developers and discuss what is coming from this hunting simulation game. It is set to release in October 2008 and will be for the PC and Xbox 360.

Besides some new AI with the animals being hunted, this game also has a unique tournament structure where they are connecting with real life outfitters to provide prizes for the events.

The develop made sure we understood that this game was almost trying to teach you how to hunt from the realism that it offers. If a deer is a long ways away, it could take awhile to run to the hot spot. To me this game did not look very good, graphically, and I would not recommend it unless you’re a big hunter. One of the best things about this game is that it’s only $39.99 on the Xbox 360 and $19.99 on the PC.

    Others
Additional games were being highlighted at the Atari camp, but we had to keep moving. Race Pro looked cool and then What’s Cooking Jamie Oliver, DragonBall Z, and Neverwinter Nights were a few that were also there. You can tell that Atari is not a high profile game developing company at this time, but it was a cool to be there for sure!
