  1. Gvirus05 Tales of Vesperia Review

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 24 2008

Well with my xbox 360 being repaired, I figured I have time now to post another review. The xbox 360's RPG lineup hasn't been all it's cracked up to be. That is, until Tales of Vesperia released.

Finally, a hardcore RPG game for the xbox 360. Tales of Vesperia is one of many games in the "Tales of..." series, with the last big hit being on the gamecube. (Tales of Symphonia) Tales of Vesperia definately doesn't disappoint the JRPG fan.

The game follows a 21 yr old rebel named Yuri. He hates everything to do with the government, he's an ex-knight, and his best friend is a knight They both want to change the corruption in the government, but find themselves bumping heads throughout the game. Yuri is followed by his faithful pipe-smoking, dagger-wielding, blue wolf named Repede. Yuri is a poor man living in the lower quarter of the capital. His journey begins when somebody steals a seal that keeps the lower quarter from flooding. From there he is taken on an adventure across the world, making many friends (including a naive pink-haired shelterd princess, ugh cliche) and exposing a corrupt government, a historical secret, and saving the world from eating itself. (yeah, the story takes some interesting turns). So nonetheless, the story is excellent. There are many twists and turns, but also the classic morals of making friends, doing the right thing, etc etc.

The animation is excellent as well. Characters are cel-shaded. This had me worried at first, but it was pulled off with a great style. There are many high-quality cut-scenes, whether they are CGI or Animated. The battle system is fun, many tales fans are familiar with this system. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Battles do take place in real-time, where you can unleash many combos, techniques, spells. You can use up to 4 characters in a battle, so assemble your party accordingly. The music in the game really captures the mood of the environments or situations. Yet again, the Tales series delivers another awesome soundtrack.

This game is massive. If you run straight through the game without side quests, the game will take about 50-60 hrs to beat. If you like to complete everything, you better set aside at least 90 hrs for this game. With that being said, you also get to start a New Game + after completion. Depending on how well you battled in the game, you earn what's called Grade. You can spend grade to buy things for your new game +. You can transfer weapons over, transfer your level, skills, items, etc etc. This does at a lot of replay value to the game.

If you are a fan of the Tales series, you probably already have this game. IF you like JRPG's, buy it. If you are a fan of RPG's in general, you at least need to give this game a try.

    OVERALL: 9/10

I noticed a couple different reviews that put this slightly behind (only a half point on a 10-point scale) Infinite Undiscovery. Have you had a chance to play that one? If so, which do you like better? I've been playing IU a little and am enjoying it so far - just wondering how the two compare and if ToV would be worth picking up.
