Player Chronicle -- Posted on May 10 2008

Let's see, how can I describe this game well without adding spoilers in the mix...we'll find out, eh?

I just finished the final story mission of GTA4. And I must say, I'm a bit torn. But overall, this game is excellent. I wouldn't put it on the pedestal most reviewers seemed to before the game was released, but it's still a fantastic game.

With a game the size of GTA4, you really don't know where to begin a review. There's just so much one can cover. Controls have made a fairly drastic change, combat has been re-tooled, the engrossing storyline. All of these are excellent places to start, so that's what I'll do.

After I popped GTA4 into my PS3 and watched the opening cutscene, I got my first taste of driving. I was dumbfounded when I mashed the X button and didn't move an inch(yes, I don't read directions). You actually had to slow down cars to take corners, some cars barely take corners at all. It was kind of a turn off at first. But as the game progressed I got better and better at driving. So as one can imagine, I was happy that the driving had not detracted from the fun.

Since I'm on controls, I might as well mention the new combat system. Rockstar has adopted more of a duck-and-cover approach to combat rather than a run-and-gun approach as they used to. Nearly anything can be used as cover. You can blind fire almost any weapon from behind cover. It's a really great system. A lot more survival depends on good use of cover, rather than "Oh my god, I hope I kill them before they kill me".

In interests of keeping this short, I'll discuss the storyline now and call it quits.

I REALLY enjoyed the storyline. Most of the time I really felt for Niko in his crazy mixed up adventures in Liberty City. But at the same time, I couldn't help but wonder why he would do jobs after a certain point, when I had over $350,000 dollars. Isn't that enough on the short term? Smile Another neat aspect of the storyline is the fact that you can choose some characters fates. This has bearing on what happens in the story. I can only assume that the story would be slightly different if I let some people live and some people die. Then again who knows. If I had a choice between working for someone or killing them, who's to say that that person won't betray me mid-mission and I have to kill them, leaving me at the same point no matter which mission I took? The last thing I'll mention is that on most of the "important" people you're told to kill(you know, the ones that blab for a few hours before you finally kill them), you actually have to pull the trigger. This gives a much more interactive feel to the game, rather than just killing said character in a cutscene.

That said, why am I torn about the final mission? I didn't get to pull the trigger, the final shot into the bad guy.(oh come on, that's not a spoiler! YOU BEAT THE BAD GUYS!) I would've really loved to do that, and I really don't know why they didn't let me, when I got to do the same to a lot of other people.

Ok, wrapping up. Why didn't I mention graphics? They're stunning on both consoles, I really don't care either way. Too much emphasis is put onto graphics, and I just want a damn fun game to play. GTA4 has definitely succeeded in being an awesome game.
