  1. GamerFr33k PSP: Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Feb 25 2008

How many of you have played games that are way too short? How many of those games were for a handheld? In my experience at least, I have to answer yes to both questions. Well, prepare to be amazed, there’s a long game for a handheld. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for the PSP, now off the bat I have to admit, I’ve never played the Monster Hunter games that came before Freedom 2. This game surprised me and disappointed me at the same time. So let’s start with the ups.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is a big game, I haven’t beaten it yet but compared to how fast I’ve beaten other games, usually within the next say to 5 days of purchase, and this is a big game. Your sole purpose in this game is to hunt monsters, earn money, and poke points. Poke points are used to upgrade your farm so you have more materials to use to then create your own weapons, so on and so forth. Think of it as kind of a fun action filled version of Harvest Moon from Nintendo, only with monsters.

Now, to touch on the downs of this game. Off the bat there is way too much reading to do in game to fully experience the games potential. You’ll spend your first hour or so of the game reading about how to play and all it has to offer to your experience of the game. But on top of that, once you do finally get to play, the camera controls are a mess, or at least lacking. There is no targeting system, so you have to fight between keeping yourself alive while you fight, but on top of that, the camera controls is the D-Pad while you control your character with the PSP “Joystick”. Complete pain in the you know what. There is also the problem with the multiplayer. Now I’m fine with multiplayer, in fact I think this game would more fun and bearable with the multiplayer, but its ad-hoc only. Meaning the only multiplayer you can get is with someone nearby you hopefully playing the game by chance or someone you know. What it could really use is multiplayer through infrastructure (internet) so that I can experience multiplayer, even if no one around me wants to play. There is infrastructure available, but only for downloading more quests and content for the game. This is a plus for me out of the whole thing.

And lastly there is no storyline. Now some may view that as the final straw and never buy the game, well hold on there, it’s a good and bad thing. It’s bad because there is no other purpose in the game beside hunt monsters and gather items. It’s good because there is no other purpose in the game beside hunt monsters and gather items. Now here’s why the same reason for good and bad. Sometimes there just needs to be a game everyone can own just because they don’t want to think about anything, not even the storyline, and just play. This is where it’s good. But if you want some depth in the game, and have a goal in the game besides kill any animal in the game that twitches, then this game isn’t for you.

Overall, despite all the negatives I listed, I’d give this game and overall score of 8/10. Now to back up my score. Once you get around the bad camera controls, your experience of the game increases tenfold, hard to believe but it does. This game for me has ended up being one of those games where you’ll play other games and then you might hit a lull where you just can’t find a good game to play at the moment. But then there’s this game where it will suffice as something to do until that one game your really looking for comes around.

For now, good night, and good gaming.
