  1. Hobben Demo Night: Batman Arkham Asylum

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 26 2009

Last night I decided that I would catch up on the demos that have come out recently. To my surprise there where quite a few that I actually wanted to play. Here is the first of five demos I played and what I thought about it.

    Batman Arkham Asylum

I was generally impressed with this demo. The intro was very well done and got me engaged in the game. The combat was some of the best I’ve ever played, simple, flashy, and deep.

The combat in the demo was somewhat limited but was impressed me the most was the shear amount of combat animations they had. It seemed that every time I countered an enemy attack it was a new animation I was seeing. During the combat you really feel like Batman, a true combat expert systematically taking down enemies and chaining what seemed to be unlimited combos together.

Another cool system they have was this Bat Vision thing (can’t remember the actual name I’m sure someone that owns they game can inform us though). When activated it highlights enemies and color codes them based on their threat level. In this mode you can grapple up to gargoyles spread around the area. This serves two functions; first it lets you get a nice vantage point where you can see all the enemies and their patrols. Second it allows you to position yourself in such a way you can glide kick and take out enemies silently. It’s a great system, swooping around in the rafters, getting the perfect position and the systematically taking out your enemies one by one.

Just one thing felt awkward in the game and that was the weird camera angle. It in third person but the camera sits really low and Batman is offset in the left part of the frame. It just felt weird, I wanted to zoom out and not look directly at Batass the whole time.

Overall I’ll probably pass on this one, not because it’s a bad game just because I’ve already committed funds to other games and I’m not that big of a fan of staring at Batman’s rear end

Nice review. I am sure my sentiments about that game would resound along the same lines, so I will probably not pick it up either.
