Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 02 2009

I traveled all the way back to (not so) lovely Pennsylvania to meet up with the family for Thanksgiving. While I was there I asked if I still had stuff laying around the house that was in the way. And what was pulled out of the closet...!?!?!?!

    !?!?!?!?!

    The SNES. WHOOHOO!

Zelda, Mega Man X, F-Zero, Super R Type (OH BOY!) Donkey Kong Country and more! But the 2 games I saw that nearly stopped my heart: Super Metroid and Secret of Mana. I doubt that I have invested more time into any other game than I have these 2.

I just completed Super Metroid for the first time in probably well over 5 years. It was refreshing, the game play was seamless, the sprites and animation looked a tad dated but not bad, the power-ups were exciting again, and the bosses still just as big and memorable. After escaping the collapsing planet at the end of the game, I started to wonder if I had found all of the hidden items, all those pesky missile tanks and power bombs, and if so, did I do it fast enough to warrant the best ending?

I first played the game when it was released 15 years ago in 1994, and I'm happy to announce that 15 years later, without the aid of any kind, I clocked in at 2 hours and 30 minutes with 100% item collection. It made me smile and I said, "sweet! I did it!" out loud to nobody. And as soon as I beat it, I started again to try and get it faster.

Next up, a new play through of Secret of Mana which I'm downright excited for.

And for all of you youngsters out there: if you haven't played Super Metroid, you're doing yourself a great disservice. The same goes for Secret of Mana. Play these games.

    Thanks.

p.s. I know ROMs are available and such, but I don't consider them nearly as pure as dusting off an old console and playing the game the old fashioned way.

The only reason I use my roms is because neither my Nintendo or SNES are very dependable when it comes to actually playing games. I do know the feeling of finding an old classic after so many years and shoving the cartridge in...Good times...good times...

Its the best coming back to an old favorite. Kind of like rekindling an old friendship. I did the same thing about a month ago with Super Mario Bros. I was a little slower than I would have liked but I clocked in at about 50-something minutes.
