  1. BEN Is Multiplayer Screen Watching Illegal?

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Sep 07 2008

As we were playing some CoD4, Halo 3, and some Wii bowling over the weekend, I had to ask what people thought about watching or glancing your opponents screen, when playing on the same screen during a multiplayer match.

We all had a good laugh, but something about this little dirty deed has me thinking that it's partially unfair, but also has a skill element that may just be taking advantage of your situation and gameplay environment.

What do you think? Is looking at your opponent's position in a shooter game any different than looking at your buddy's play in the original Techmo Bowl NES game?? haha, let's hear from you...

I agree with you guys that it's not really "unfair" per se, but it can be annoying to other members of the party, especially people that don't own the game or know the maps particularly well. example:

Back in high school, my friends always used to school me in Goldeneye, because they used their knowledge of the map and knowing what equipment I had to figure out a way to destroy me. I pretty much HAD to start screen watching in order to be on a level playing field with those guys, and eventually got to the point where I was watching the three other screens more than my own. I kicked the habit for the most part once I got Halo 1, but have noticed myself doing it in CoD4 on occasion. I guess it's all in good fun as long as it's not in a competitive setting. When you're just messing around with friends though, and there really isn't anything to be gained or lost by playing, it's fine.

Being as how all parties involved have the same advantage at their disposal says to me that it's perfectly ok. In a lot of ways it takes skill to be able to analyze your opponents screen at a glance to gain a tactical advantage. In a FPS for example, knowing the map you're playing well enough to see where your opponent is and what weapon he/she is using, what weapon he/she may acquire shortly , and how to counter-act such things effectively. As I said before, ALL parties involved have the same advantage and so it makes for a really interesting and challenging multiplayer game, especially due to eliminating any surprise element you might like to use. On a side note, when my brother and I play Doubles on Halo 3, we always split screen. It helps to avoid minor communication mix-ups and we're able to see first hand where the other one is thus helping to more effectively defeat the enemy. Wink Short and sweet, I know.
