  1. BEN Movie Review - GAMER

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jan 20 2010

So the title of this alone, is attractive to this entire community. Many movies have been made to reflect a game or visa versa, but this is a little different.

GAMER is a movie that will surprise you. Probably not in a good way, but instead make you wonder if the story is about futuristic video gaming, or more about the human desire to control others.

The movie was full of action and did make me imagine playing MW2 or another FPS in real life, but the character development and overall story made me wonder a little bit.

As this title becomes available on DVD, I'm sure many of us will consider watching it, so I wanted to share some insight on what I thought after seeing it at home last night.

Basically this government project to research mind/body control went wrong and placed our hero in prison for life. In an attempt to get out alive, the hero goes into this live game they call Slayers, where he is controlled by a random 17 year old (who has a futuristic/sick/interactive media room btw!). The struggle for him to escape is the main plot, while side story ensue.

One of the main side stories is about this hero's wife and her struggle to survive as a similar pawn in another real-life game environment. This game in the movie is called Society and feels like The Sims or Second Life. This is where the true f'd up stuff occurs in the movie. There is nudity, sex, and violence involved in this aggressive world where one person pays to play, while the other is paid to be controlled.

The main villain in the story was a let down and I wish it would have been done more intelligently and by an better actor.

Long story short, this is a mature movie that will make you think a little. I wasn't what I thought it was going to be, but can't way I hated my time watching it either. Since overall ratings are always fun, I'd give GAMER a 6.75/10, but hope this concept of real life gaming has a better produced concept in the future.

My only question for YOU is, would you either PLAY or BE PLAYED?!

I still haven't seen it, but i'm one of those who just has to say that i saw it. LoLz Besides i just saw Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen, so im psyched for another good Butler Movie.

And i think i might like to play another person, but using ppl like this, even deathrow inmates is a clear civil rights violation, so idk. But if a deathrow inmate has a shot at freedom, why not?

And Dexter is da shiz! as an actor! Very Happy Ninja

I Netflix'd this and watched it last night - I pretty much agree with everything BEN said, It was just "eh". I wouldn't recommend it unless you just need to say that you saw it... like I did. I gave it a 3/5 stars on Netflix.

...and to answer Ben's question, I'd steer clear of the whole thing - I'll stick with my PS5 ( Wink ) and free of any controlling or being controlled!
