  1. BEN Modern Warfare 2 - One Week In

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 17 2009

So I've been playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as much as I can the past week, like everyone else! With Assassin's Creed and Left 4 Dead coming out today (11/17/09), I thought I'd share my initial thoughts on MW2, one week in.
    ____________________

Okay, so this is the most realistic FPS game available to date on a console, that's a given, but this game has gone into depth that I have not seen before and it really has lived up to the hype for me. Call me mainstream, close-minded, or whatever else you want, but...

Modern Warfare 2 is easily my "Game of the Year" selection.

I say this not only for the things you've seen and heard about this game, but also because Infinity Ward had some serious pressure to bring the community a game that would blow us away. I'm not the authority for all this game has to offer, that's for sure, but after only playing the multiplayer side of this beastly title, I know it's something special.

I'm currently 41% completed with the Multiplayer element of this game. I'm at a level 29, while I fight to keep my K/D ratio even, haha...it's 805 Kills to 820 Deaths at this exact moment, so I should get this Chronicle finished so I can jump back in and get +15 to even things up, right?! lol

Anyways, I'm kinda beating around the bush right now, so let me just get to the point and share some of this game's multiplayer features and highlights that really stick out to me...

    - Everything good about CoD4 is here, plus enhancements, additions, and even new elements that range from neat to groundbreaking

    - New guns are mixed with the best from CoD4

    - More equipment, new Death Streak elements, and additional add-ons keep your class progressing rapidly

    - Graphics are stunning, duh

    - New maps are fresh and great to explore

    - Physics and game programming is epic and almost always exactly on target

    - The Class System is even more robust/awesome than CoD4

    - Customized Accolades, Titles, and Emblems are a nice touch

    - New Killstreak rewards are deadly, unique, and make you feel powerful in-game

    - Gametypes are vast, with "Express Team Deathmatch" to keep you moving

    - More levels (70) give you more gameplay, challenges, and XP for you to fight for

    - Connecting with friends is easy, as everyone is playing and the party system isn't too bad

    - Less games are dropped, with the new in-game host optimization

    - I hear the campaign is awesome and that the new Special Ops mode is a good time with friends, but if you know me, it may be some time before I can share insight on those elements of this game, lol

Even things as simple as the title screen not wasting any time for the user to get into the action, shows me that Infinity Ward knows what their demographic wants!

Even with so many great things about this game that I enjoy, the major thing I do not like about this game is it's selfish approach to; one player/console per screen. This literally destroys the chance of MW2 being used in small and medium video game tournaments around the world! I just don't understand the rational behind this approach, besides more copies needing to be sold, but even that seems off. All multiplayer games should use the Halo party system and local multiplayer functionality as a BASE MODEL, before game development even begins!!! Infinity Ward, change your ways on this and you will have the perfect game Shocked

There is much more I can rave about, but the fact is, if you like First Person Shooters...this is a game you must own.

At the midnight release of this game last week, I saw a guy sell back his CoD4, CoD:WaW, and Halo 3 just to buy Modern Warfare 2. I asked him how he could sell such epic titles and he said, "cause this is all I'm going to play now!"

It's been a very, very good game for us as expected. Ben, the Spec Ops stuff is some of the more exciting missions in the game. Break away from your multiplayer and give it a try.

Borderlands totally took my son's attention until...COD:MW2 hit. I got him for a nice 3-day weekend last week, so from Friday afternoon until Sunday night, he played MW2 almost exclusively (with a little Borderlands thrown in for good measure). In that time, he got to Level 48, with some 90+ titles amassed, lots of sweet weapons unlocked, and a kill streak almost high enough (23) to use the nuke.

His favorite gametypes are Sabotage and Domination, but he did play a lot of Team Deathmatch too.

As for me, I'm slogging through the campaign, trying to get a handle on those controls before I venture out to LIVE. The campaign is lots of fun (pretty difficult at times - thank goodness for being able to restart your objectives), and the story is terrific.

The only phrase in BEN's review I'll challenge is "the most realistic FPS game." Infinity Ward never wanted to create the most realistic shooter out there, simply the most authentic. You can argue symantics, but for FPS realism I'd say something like Operation Flashpoint : Dragon Rising is probably closer to a true military simulation than any Call of Duty game. That said, probably nobody on here has played that game, so we know which one wins the hearts (and wallets) of gamers everywhere. Wink
